About this deal

At times I felt like this was going to lead up to some scandalous murder in the cabin in the woods, with an intense, shocking ending, but instead it just slogged through an excessively long holiday away for a bunch of queer strangers in toxic relationships, hung up on gender roles, and a bunch of other performative bullshit.

Gays hated overhead lighting; Jules, their host and the house’s owner, had let the original ceiling fixture dust over, taped down the light switches.Dykette is a portrait of a certain corner of queer culture that is part satire, part ode, and full of delightful cringe. For example, this moment: "She couldn't believe straight girls made such a big deal about never faking it, like faking it was anti-feminist. Sasha is the kind of girl you would feud with on Tumblr and know, deep in your heart, that she's the most annoying person in the world, but ultimately you'd find solace in the fact that she knows it too.

Jesse goes by he/him and she/her, and Sasha refers to her both as her "boyfriend" and her "girlfriend". What I hope is that the book is taken seriously, or semi seriously, in its celebration of joy and humor and gossip. This deeply smart, original, and funny debut novel has permanently shifted my understanding of the relationship between honesty and performance .There was so much detail for such meaningless things and it dragged on and on (I don't care about every detail of each characters' outfit and what brands they are wearing, etc). Based upon early reviews, I bought this expecting a fun vacation read about three queer couples on vacation. Our protagonist is Sasha, a femme lesbian in her twenties who loves all things girly and is here for the toxic womanhood the average magazine sells to usually straight women.
