About this deal

The edge of the ruffles were finished with the plastic ‘wire’ stripped out of Rigilene boning and zigzagged onto the edge to make them stand out like this! Many of us probably have buttons, zips, hooks and eyes, threads, elastic (doesn’t last indefinitely though so check it hasn’t perished before you sew it into something you don’t want to fall down around your ankles! I think it's thrown around a lot to indicate high-quality, but unless you're an expert in those techniques, I don't know that the result is necessarily high quality. Haute couture requires underlinings, facings, seam finishes, bound button holes, matching stripes and checks and of course, using the very best of pure natural fabrics like silk, linen and wool. I guess it makes sense – there are different needles for different things on sewing machines, so I can’t believe I’d never thought that there would also be different needles for different hand sewing tasks!

Like the below dress, which I’m sure must have been the inspiration for the amazing one made by Cynthai Settje of Red Threaded. Who knew there was a link between doing a creative activity and a more balanced sense of well-being? I’m making an effort to look cheerful in this most recent Lamazi blog make, but the wine was slightly off watered down Rosé from my daughter’s fridge and it was 10. I have never found them comfortable and I thought (excuse my French) ‘fuck it’ I want to be comfortable and be able to dance without having to take my shoes off, or feeling like my feel were going to fall off after 10 minutes! Each new collection was often an evolution of the previous one with a few of the most popular styles being developed in new colours and fabrics, plus some completely new styles. All of this will help minimise the pieces stretching out of shape, especially as a lot of this pattern has seams running on a diagonal. One final project I was commissioned by a friend to make was a Christmas chasuble for her to wear as she presides over her Christmas services in church. of fabric, which may not have been quite sufficient, I could not take that risk so I did it this way instead. In truth, I wasn’t in the headspace to participate while it was going on but it did cause me to think about some of the projects I’ve completed in recent years which went some way to being ‘sustainable’.

One garment that offered massive chances to use up multiple fabrics was the ubiquitous tiered and ruffled dress-a buffet dress in current parlance!I tend to think that the phrase “couture sewing” is recent and that it results from the DIY phenomena in combination with the popularity of Project Runway. This is an example of a deep grown-on faced hem on the Trend Patterns Square dress which I’ve made twice. There is just a little fraying on the cut edges which I overlocked singly as I went along, as per the pattern instructions. Each one was a highly skilled, and fast, machinist who would make the whole garment from start to finish.

But I honestly think it can sound a bit pretentious to describe things as couture, (if you're not speaking in french already! Jen’s beautiful jacket made with cashmere ‘slitter’ tape, all carefully pieced to make usable sized pieces big enough to sew into a garment. I particularly like this as a way of avoiding using a neck or armhole facing which can be notorious for constantly rolling into view or flapping about annoyingly. showed us how she takes inspiration from high-end fashion and clothing all around her but then recreated the looks using multiple end-of-line garments and thrifted clothes. so i would guess what most home sewists do on a regular basis (well i'm a beginner but I'm working on it! S. There seems to be a prevalent notion that something like an (ordinary) handstitched hem is “couture. Haute couture to me means one of a kind things ( unless two people or more want the same thing) made by hand, it can be made by other source than a french or italian fashion house, as long as it is made into perfection and done by hand. If you read about my pattern hack of the Simple Sew Cocoon dress you will see how this variation of hemming came about.

All of these I attached by appliquéing around the black outlines (I was literally making it up as I went along! and another version in shot silk taffeta I remember cutting this little dress, it was made especially for the photo I think style was being made when I first went to work at David Fielden. We can use techniques from both, but ultimately it's a different thing and we shouldn't be ashamed of making our own clothes.THEN it was covered in another more open lace fabric and over-sprayed with gold so that it left a stencil-type design. Clothes you see on the high-street are made with processes and machines not possible for the home-sewer, so we reach for a more flattering comparison.
