About this deal

I’ve always written about characters on journeys of self-discovery and increasingly I’ve been writing about outsiders. Freckles is a complex and authentic personality with many traits to indicate that she is neurodivergent, making her feel out of step with those around her.

The protagonist, Allegra Bird, initially struggles with her identity and purpose, working as a parking officer in Dublin and feeling disconnected from her past. I thought the author had perfectly portrayed Allegra’s insecurities and turmoil, caused by the abandonment of one of her parents. Allegra was always aware of her father’s love for her but she had never known the love of her mother who abandoned them both following Allegra’s birth. However, when a stranger gets into a tussle with her over a parking ticket, he yells at her, “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”, implying that her five people must be losers just like she is.

Now, in a quest to understand, she must find not one but five people who shape her – and who will determine her future. The insult that she is the average of the five people she spends the most time with becomes a catalyst for change, propelling her on a journey to redefine her relationships and find her true self. When she hears the quote telling her people’s personalities are made up of five people around them, she longs to meet those who will improve her lot.

I see many readers loved this book, but unfortunately, I wasn’t one of them, don’t let my review put you off from reading this book. Cecelia Ahern’s storytelling prowess, humour, and ability to capture the essence of life make this novel a captivating and heartwarming read. Despite the book following Allegra on her journey I didn’t feel like I really knew who she was or that she had any major character development, I just craved a little more depth from her. In conclusion, “Freckles” is one of the most uplifting and refreshing books, offering a delightful journey through the landscapes of Ireland and the complexities of human relationships.

I must also mention that Freckles features a lot of topical themes, diversity and contemporary attitudes. Her mother abandoned her as a child, her dream of joining the Garda has been dashed, and the only constant in her life, her father, is taking his eccentricity to a whole new level.
