About this deal

This is one of the main reasons I was particularly drawn to this book, as I was born and raised in Devon, and it's wonderful to see how it is documented through Roger Deakins' eyes. I’ve certainly studied photography, different photographers — mainly street photographers and photojournalists, but to say they’ve influenced what I do. So that was interesting going back to those photographs, and then selecting ones that might not be for the archive where they are and they might not be the first choices because they don’t show a village square or they’re little moments, but they are things that I’m attracted to, so it was nice to rediscover those and let them live on the page. Tierney Gearon is an acclaimed Los Angeles-based contemporary photographer, known for her free-spirited portrayals of Malibu life.

Upon completing his college studies he took a job as a photographer at Beaford Arts Centre in his native North Devon, where he was tasked with capturing everyday life in the area. BYWAYS includes previously unpublished personal black-and-white stills that reflect a life spent looking and telling stories through images, from 1971 to the present. For many years, he has enjoyed capturing the serene beauty and rugged charm of coastal areas, mainly in his home county of Devon – a beloved place the now primarily LA-based cinematographer still visits when possible. His myriad professional honors also two Independent Spirit Awards, numerous Critic's awards and the National Board of Review's Career Achievement Award.

Others are images that caught his eye as walked on a weekend, or catching the last of the light at the end of a day’s filming whilst working on projects in cities such as Berlin or Budapest, on Sicario in New Mexico, Skyfall in Scotland and in England in 1917. Traveling for his cinematic work has allowed Deakins to photograph landscapes all over the world; in this third group of images, that same irony remains evident. You see it in the bus stop photo, juxtaposing different images with the young girl in the poster and the harshness of the bus stop.

Some photos in the book are purely there because they stand in for a part of my life shooting documentaries, like the round-the-world yacht race. Although there are perhaps one or two, you won't find behind the scenes images in here, if that's what you're looking for. This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees. Images that tell a story and include an element of humour also appeal because “it’s not just about lighting and framing. Deakins has been admitted to both the British Society of Cinematographers and to the American Society of Cinematographers. Byways, his first book, features moments captured from the ‘70s to the present day, with a focus on the coastal and rural splendour of the southwest of England alongside other aspects of life observed along the way. An example in Byways Deakins feels demonstrates this perfectly is a photograph he took in 2004 in Weston-super-Mare of an elderly lady at a bus stop in the rain.
