About this deal

From North to South, rich and poor, Black and white, these are the people who know, first-hand, what is going wrong – and how we can fix it. And now maybe all that was left was to see how it was all to be resolved – except I’m less than half way through! Many people loved this book -- it was somewhat a page turner - but that doesn't mean it had inspiring attributes.

Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs. plus, this is one of those books where i can already hear the shrieking of the people about how all of the spoilers in the world are being spoiled by me so it's probably best for me to do this instead. Told through narrative extracts and transcribed blog entries, this is a quiet, unassuming novel in which the characters and the situations they find themselves in speak volumes. The *sickening* element is certainly present, but applied with a gentle hand and refrains from growing too dark or heavy.I would have liked to know more about some aspects in these characters’ lives and also the story to be longer. As for the story, it was disturbing on so many levels that it made me feel during several places throughout the book as though I’d been sucker-punched. In this dark, psychological thriller, Georgia Maguire pushes listeners to explore the furthest limits of their moral codes. I have been reading books from a very early age and before I could read, I was always flicking through picture books - I'm sure I was born with a book in my hand! From the outside, Jack and Grace appear to have the perfect marriage, the perfect house, the perfect life.

Jack Angel, a handsome and successful lawyer, not only wants to marry Grace, but also makes it clear from the start, that he is more than happy to include Millie, and have her come to live with them both.Behind Closed Doors is so incredibly nightmarish, raw, gut-wrenching, and unsettling that it’s impossible not to be taken on a wild emotional ride. But on the couple’s wedding day Millie suffered from a terrible slip and fall down the stairs breaking her leg and removing her from the wedding festivities entirely (*dun dun dunnnnnnnnn*).

Although I questioned some of Grace's decisions, it felt like one of those situations where you couldn't possibly know how you would react unless it was happening to you. Now, I’ll concede that I’m being reductive as hell here, but every character in this book is so blitheringly, frustratingly, completely, and freakishly stupid that I can’t really help it. Grace walks headfirst into what is obviously a bad deal in such a glorious fashion that I’m reminded of that old lie about chickens staring up at the rain and drowning.Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense.
