The recycled elastic headband uses a Repreve fiber which ticks a small sustainability box, and is incredibly soft and comfy.

As a more compact unit with a smaller capacity battery it can't out-compete the Storm 500-R for burn time; but size isn't everything, and it does quite a lot with what it's got. At 400 lumens, the Black Diamond Storm 400 is engineered for all conditions, featuring a robust waterproof and dustproof housing. I've got two Fenix HL55 headtorches (not the more recent usb chargeable ones), one gets used on the hill and one that I have used for caving for several years. The PowerTap Technology on the side of the housing allows you to toggle between the dim and bright settings to preserve battery life. But this rugged model has a lot more potential than that, with a balance of brightness and burn time that'd make it equall.

I don't think I've ever managed to break a micro USB input, and as I have plenty of old micro USB cables, and nothing that yet takes the new style, it's not presently an issue for me if this input is looking dated.

The headlamp has our Brightness Memory feature, which allows you to turn the light on and off at a chosen brightness without reverting back to the default, full power setting. The two red LEDs are great for night time photography when you don’t want to ruin your night vision, or, perhaps, when you are crammed into an Appalachian Trail community trail hut and don’t want to disturb fellow hikers.Power Tap allows you to adjust the brightness simply by tapping the touch sensitive housing with your bare finger, think of it like the main beam switch in your car. Exceptional battery life and extensive activity tracking and metrics - the Instinct 2S Solar has a lot to offer in a neat, nifty little package. Its brightness memory means that you can turn the light off at a chosen brightness without it reverting back to the default when you switch it back on, and PowerTap function means you can alternate between full strength and dimmed light by tapping the side of the torch, though it is very easy to do this by accident! The headlamp's angle can be adjusted down a considerable amount via a hinged connection that is very similar to Petzl Tikka models. Appearances are deceptive though, and I’d say whilst by no means the hardiest model I’ve ever used, the SPOT 400-R isn’t as fragile as it seems.Two buttons; one to toggle between lights and another to dim / toggle between the functions could solve everything, but it is what it is. I frequently commute on a bike at night and attach this lamp to my bike helmet (Giro Surface) using the elastic headband, but an adhesive mount would be much more secure. I've been stuck in red LED mode for three minutes before trying all kinds of combinations until I got lucky and the main light turned back on. The Duel fuel means that while supplied with AAA batteries it is also compatible with Black Diamonds Lithium Ion BD 1500 battery.
