Apologies for the delay, but today I’m finally sharing my review for the mesmerising and unforgettable Beautiful Shining People. His writing has appeared in Fast Company, VICE, The Guardian, Litro Magazine, The Irish Times, Screen, Quartz, and others. There’s something different about her – a kind of splintering inside her, like there’s something in there that doesn’t belong. It's rather a slow burn at first as we get to know John, Neotnia, and her father figure Goeido, a disgraced former sumo wrestler, and we discover that all have secrets, which in Neotnia's case will lead to a quest to find her real father, taking them from Tokyo to Hiroshima and onto Nagano.year-old John, a tech prodigy, enters a small cafe late at night and meets Neotina, a beautiful and enigmatic waitress. He decides on a whim to pop into a café that offers ear cleaning for only 4900 yen and he decides it might ease his jet lag.

Setting is key in this book and I don't think there could be a better location than Tokyo for this book.

In some ways sci-fi, Beautiful Shining People is set in a futuristic Tokyo - similar enough to the world of today to not seem unfamiliar, but distinctly different. Beautiful Shining People is both an intriguing thriller and a meditation and is in places unforgettable and affecting.

The characters in the book are a motley crew of outsiders who were likeable and very entertaining That very final scene is perhaps one of the most understated but powerful scenes in the book and it really did make me smile.The narrator is John, an a8 year old American coding genius who has come to Tokyo to sell his quantum code apps to Sony for a lot of money.

It’s hard to get deeply into a review of Beautiful Shining People without running the risk of spoiling it. It's beautiful to witness their conversations with each other on their first date, how they navigate each other and learn to trust one another. The book's suspenseful twists tie the aftermath of the bombing of Hiroshima to themes concerning the roles of scientists in either tearing or healing humanity. For many the answer seems to be moving towards none and that should be raising alarm bells for us all. On a chance encounter, he enters a cafe where he meets a young Japanese waitress, a sumo wrestler and a dog with a perfectly spherical head.I like trying something different every once in a while, and this author had been recommended to me more than once… It’s definitely not something I usually read, but the story pleasantly surprised me!
