About this deal

An RCD is a much more important subject which many campsites i've visited don't have on their posts.

While 12V provides a voltage that should not cause a fatality from an electric shock it still has the potential to cause harm. Many family tents now include a small zipped flap where the cable can enter the tent, so cables don’t need to cross the entrance. Mains cables for campervans, motorhomes, and caravans have a 3-pin campsite female end socket to plug into the van’s external electric point. This gives us greater use of the socket because the travel adapter also has two USB points for charging phones or other electronic devices.

They mention that it's a well constructed lead, works great and that the cable with fitting is very useful. If you're hooking up to a camp site power supply socket, you need a cable with one plug (male) and one socket (female) or a mobile mains unit if you're in a tent. For tent camping, the mains cable will have one or more UK plug sockets and perhaps USB points at the “tent end”. Most points are just a case of pushing the cable into the point but sometimes you have to twist it to lock it in place. The maximum Watts from your power supply is simply the voltage, 230v, multiplied by the Amps, 10 for example.

On a modern double-pole installation this is not a problem, however it is always worthwhile unplugging items that have exposed elements such as toasters and electric fires. In a tent, provided you don't overload the connection and take measures to prevent damp accessing your RCD and keep it hung up out of the way, there shouldn't be any issues. Arranging to mount it off the ground in other tents, especially those with flexible poles, can be more difficult. Many campsites only provide a 10A supply, and you may even find sites with only 5A (especially in Europe), so don't assume everything you could run at one site can be used at another. The first is to use a leisure battery, which is like a car battery and provides a 12V supply, and the second is an electric hook-up, which provides a 230V supply as you would find at home.
