About this deal

I’ve put the BBC adaptation of South Riding on my DVD rental list, so hopefully it’ll turn up in the next month or two. I think you’ll find it a really interesting and inspiring read, especially given the connection with Vera Brittain. Holtby's sixth and finest novel, South Riding, was published six months after her death, aged 37, from Bright's disease. It’s definitely my favourite of the three I’ve read so far – so if you’re thinking of tackling any of them, this would be the one I’d recommend you try.

Ooh, possibly…I know she features briefly in the recent film adaptation of a Testament of Youth, the one with Alicia Vikander in the lead role. South Riding is a character-driven book, and works brilliantly, because the characterization is brilliant.

While the book is ultimately inspiring and life-affirming, it is also underscored by a sense of mortality.

My copy of South RIding is mouldering on the shelf (like so many others) but you’ve definitely inspired me to bump it up the queue. But for her appointment to the headmistress-ship Kiplington High School for Girls she would never have met Robert Carne or fallen in love with him.The geographical area is the one Holtby grew up in and is in actuality the East Riding of Yorkshire, the area just north of the Humber centred on the city of Hull (Kingsport in the book); an area I know well. Much as I admire Winifred Holtby for her courageous feminism, peace activism and all the rest - this novel is such a mish mash - and it’s looong - it’s a modern (1930s) version of Jane Eyre complete with a taciturn, tragic but honourable version of Mr Rochester with a mad wife in an expensive care facility which is sending him bankrupt - a daughter who is somewhat hysterical and potentially ‘tainted’ so needs very careful handling - a spunky working class heroine who has managed to get an education and instead of being the governess, is the headmistress of the local girls high school, where the wobbly and unpopular young Rochester girl ends up being sent due to the family’s wealth having been eaten up by luxury sanatoriums. I think I need to revisit The Crowded Street at some point, maybe once I’ve read one or two of her others. Yes, Astell declares his love for Sarah in the TV version which definitely is no part of the book, admitted, yes Mr Holly is supposed to be a little fellow and is played by a tall one in the TV series but by and large I thought that everything that mattered had been dealt with more or less fairly even if I maintain my view that the TV version was too rushed. Showing how public decisions can mold the individual, this story offers a panoramic and unforgettable view of Yorkshire life.

There is no nostalgia for the pre-WWI past there, most of the characters are middle class or working class, and the one main character who symbolizes the fading gentry, unable to cope with the present, let alone the future, doesn't have a "golden, idyllic past" since he's simultanously an update of Mr. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Optimism and the will to optimism are different things, and Miss Holtby’s gallant effort to infer from her heroine’s change of heart a more hopeful future for society at large does not ring quite true as I have had the misfortune to read for a very long time.He is conservative, reactionary, enamoured of the old ways of farming, a keen hunter and essentially patriarchal. In some ways, Holtby’s debut novel, Anderby Wold, could be considered as a kind of ‘rehearsal’ for South Riding as some of the central themes are similar (e. Holtby sadly died in 1935 and 'South Riding', her masterpiece was published posthumously the following year. Holtby's personal masterpiece: a novel that works beautifully on all sorts of levels , capturing the life of a whole community even as it offers us the passions, frustrations and tragedies of individual lives . Nous suivons la vie de plusieurs personnages, chacun avec ses qualités, ses défauts, ses joies, ses drames.
