About this deal

It ‘trombones’ out a long way, when fully extended to 300mm (600mm equivalent), but as it’s a lightweight I find that doesn’t really matter. The front element looks massive compared to most m43 lenses, but considering what you get, it’s still a tiny lens compared to a lot of telephoto lenses. If you tend to shoot landscapes, or yearn for artistic street photos, I can’t see the Olympus 75mm being a lens of choice. This focal length is often left for portrait photography, as it gives the shooter a chance to stand a ways back and let a scene develop naturally. But there’s a difference between my parents’ generation and my generation in regards to capturing those incredibly short periods of early childhood: My parents’ generation couldn’t as easily capture those moments.

Ever since they had kids, those three or four times a year have become a valuable chance to catch up with and get to know our nieces and nephews. One question about the Gariz case if I can, I see the tripod mount on the side of the body, in what must be the Gariz own metal base.

It won’t beat a dedicated macro lens, but for casual use, this is a great way to do some macro on the cheap. This is an absurd statement (I’m sorry to say so) because what matters is not shooting at 12500 Iso with skins that look like plastic but the overall quality of the pictures. ED MSC (hereafter just referred to as the 75) is one of the final confirmations that Micro Four Thirds has finally come of age. I can see having this legendary lens in my bag for as long as I’m shooting the micro four thirds system on either an Olympus or Panasonic body.

Pair it with the Olympus PEN-F (a camera that I think is the best black and white digital camera on the market right now), and you’ll be blown away by the results. The prints are sharp, and detailed (eith proper technique, tripod use, good lighting, low ISO, optimum aperture, etc. My hunt wasn’t as exhaustive as my current lens hunts, but that’s mostly because of the widespread love for the Olympus 75mm f/1. I picked up a final production sample 75 from Olympus Malaysia a couple of weeks ago, having handled a much earlier prototype; honestly, the only thing that seems to have changed is the lens’ finish color (a light champagne color over bare metal) now matches that of the 12/2 perfectly.

I know street photographers (the traditional and conservative kind) will roll their eyes when I mention this: you can do candid shots easier with a longer focal lenth lens, such as this 75mm F1. So with this Olympus 75 being 150mm equivalent I wondered if I could even find shots to take to fill this review! It's not exactly lightweight, though: weighing in at 305 grams, it feels dense with glass and metal. Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc.

So at its 70mm end things’ll be roughly twice as large as seen normally (naked eye), and at the 200mm end things’ll look roughly 6x larger – and nearer – than normal.

my main concern is retaining image sharpness and fine detail on extremely large prints, maximum 24×36. I find this to be a lot more fun, and leads to a lot of images I am happy with versus only bringing this lens “when I think I will need it”. I had a play with a friends kit,he has the 12,45 and the 75 and I must say its a nice combination, good image quality, good auto focus and as a walk around fun kit I am definately considering it. I was considering the Sony NEX-7 only with the Zeiss 25, but it appears that this Oly kit would hold its own against the Sony in terms of sharpness and detail, despite the smaller sensor and 50% lower resolution.

This clutch mechanism is brilliant for finding the perfect focus point in a moment’s notice and eliminates having to feel around for buttons on top of the camera body. There is nothing special about it, bigger sensors are always better than smaller sensors in high ISO performance at least if they are from the same generation. Imagine my surprise when I pulled the 75mm out of the box and the lens snapped to the proper focus point in a fraction of the Panasonic 20mm’s time. It uses Olympus’ Movie-Still-Compatible (MSC) technology which allows the lens to focus lightning fast.
