About this deal

Finally, Nightwing confronts the new Robin, Jason Todd, revealing a good deal about the character and his changing self-image. In this tale of growth, we see Dick's transformation into Nightwing and some fantastic guest stars showing how they helped Grayson on his journey. Jason comes off as every bit the twerp he was when folks voted with their telephones back in the 80's, but the pairing gives Dick a chance to be both outraged ousted party and cool big brother; by the end, we're as in awe of the newly minted Nightwing as Jason is. So, for instance, while you can wedge this story between the pages of New Teen Titans, it very barely lines up with Batman.

Through his reaction upon learning about the new Robin, you get a measure of what kind of man he isn't. Dixon also introduces the narrative device of Dick writing all this as a letter to Batman, a nice little touch that helps pry further into his psyche. They have created a dynamic style that has great movement, which is perfect for a character who was with the circus. Anyways, I love the way Superman treats Dick Grayson as an equal even here, love the way Dick kinda hits on Lois Lane, and love about a zillion other things about those two characters teaming; just a great dynamic.Dick Grayson becoming Nightwing is a major growth for the character and a memorable moment in the DC Universe. I love Dick Grayson so it is absolutely no surprise that I would love a book that delves into his personal journey as he figures things out post-Robin.

The story is also narrated by Dick Grayson, as if he's talking to Batman, giving us key insight on his understanding of the Dark Knight's way of life, himself, and how the world around him works. He thus seeks advice from heroes like Superman who coincidentally ends up being the one who will present the origin story of his new name.He also checks in on the circus where the Flying Graysons were the main attraction, only to find himself unable to avoid fighting crime. In the introduction to this graphic novel we are told that Dick Grayson served as Robin for 10 years, Batman is now onto his fourth Robin he must be almost 60! Just over a decade in fact, and it especially becomes mind boggling to think that characters such as Tim Drake Robin, Catwoman and even Azrael all got solo titles before Dick did.

It’s a great option for people who want more Dick Grayson without him being Robin, and it’s a very newcomer-friendly book if you’re trying to get into DC Comics characters that are associated with Batman, but you aren’t sure where you should start. The appeal of Jason Todd--at least, in theory--would be that he would be Robin, but that he would be tougher and more complicated than the clean, mostly do-right Dick Grayson. As if he had never left the character he helped to give such depth, Dixon gets right back in the swing of mixing the pathos of Dick Grayson in with the somersaults of Robin and provides a timeless yarn about growing up with a super-heroic edge. I know that is not a major spoiler to some of us, but it was entertaining to see it happen in a different medium. But honestly, it was so refreshing to see Grayson come into his own as Nightwing and about damn time.A place for fans of DC's comics, graphic novels, movies, and anything else related to one of the largest comic book publishers in the world and home of the World's Greatest Superheroes! It’s also an interesting look at Bruce and his obsession with fighting crime, and it also showed Jason Todd becoming Robin. Was this a self-inflicted punishment, because he didn't have a lot of time for a back up plan or did Bruce really kick his son out of the house? Chuck Dixon's resume includes thousands of scripts for iconic characters like Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Iron Man, the Punisher, the Simpsons, Spongebob Squarepants, GI Joe and many others. Now that comic books have started to gain more popularity and attention, we are continuing to see our characters leave the four color pages and make the leap to screens both small and big.

Unfortunately those early days of him being Nightwing are largely covered in Titans’ related books, and, it did not really address the time period immediately leaving the Batcave and emerging as Nightwing, in any real depth. He was always my favorite Robin and getting to see him come into his own as Nightwing just made me feel all warm and fuzzy. Reddit and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to provide you with a better experience. It's a coming-of-age tale that is equal parts Nightwing's emergence and the passing of the torch to Jason Todd. Fans of the Dick Grayson character are familiar with the broad strokes of Nightwing’s development, but most of that history still focussed on Grayson’s time as a sidekick, and as Robin. Even though Dick Grayson - the young man formerly known as Batman's first Robin, that 'Boy Wonder' half of the dynamic duo - has a tragic backstory comparable to his mentor / partner this was a nicely uptempo and high energy graphic novel. This is one of those stories that make you sad that you're finished and, since it's just a graphic novel, you're finished pretty quick. Dixon does his own spin on the whole "Nightwing got his new codename from Kryptonian" lore deal that got ditched for a little while post-Crisis and that I'm happy came back; to me, one of the reasons that Nightwing is probably the best hero in the DC Universe (in a meta sense) is that he's essentially the product of Batman raising a kid with Superman stopping by to take him out for his birthday and shit (and what a sitcom that would make).
