About this deal

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. To really appreciate the book, I think you have to be familiar with either boating, are the places mentioned.

I read this books for my book group out of 10 of us only 2 had finished it and normally we have all completed the book, clearly I was not the only one to who's enthusiasm ran out. Not in the same bracket as the Paul Theroux travels on railways I started reading last year and have addictively ripped through but entertaining nonetheless. So, if you are on a plane and reach into that elasticized pocket in the seatback in front of you and find a discarded copy of “Narrow Dog to Carcassonne” don’t be surprised. They have tootled along the gentle canals of the UK, and come up with the idea of crossing the channel and going down the French canals and the Rhone to Carcassonne in the South. Like Estuary ( reviewed earlier) I sort of enjoyed this book, but there were significant qualifications.

Like many readers of this book I really struggled with the style of writing and in the end I just did not find this an enjoyable read. Narrow Dog to Carcassonne” is a 397 page version of Aunt Edna’s slide show of her trip to the Corn Palace. Aside from the commentary about daily life in France, the challenges of taking a narrow boat outside it's usual habitat and the quirky boating community, I particularly enjoyed the author's meditations on how history lives on.Carcassone isn't difficult to get into if you permit yourself the same sense of humour that drove the writing. It was funny in parts and I learned something about narrow boats and whippets and a whole lot else besides.

Then I strip naked, grease myself all over, and hang upside down among the ironmongery, grunting and cursing. It was a good trip, but I left it feeling that Darlington is a pub bore, that nobody knows better than him and that he itches and burns with a desire to let you know just how bloody smart he is. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. This was a rambling prattle, that appeared to have mostly a satirical negative overtone, regarding fleeting glimpses of people and restaurants along the route. Nothing wrong with the story but since I KNOW the USA, and can picture the places they went, it was just more relatable. The story of a man, his wife and his whippet who sail their narrowboat from the Midlands to the South of France including a Channel crossing would be interesting however written but the main selling point is the author's sense of humour. She has a first class degree in French, has run thirty marathons, and can leap tall buildings with a single bound.
