What this meant was I could keep the My Passport Wireless SSD in the overhead luggage compartment on a plane, whilst our two kids could be sitting on nearby seats watching their favorite shows, and my wife and I could be streaming movies to our respective iPads… all at the same time! All I need to do is insert a memory card from my camera into the side of the My Passport, then throw the unit back into my camera bag – without having to do anything else, the unit creates a fast backup to its internal SDD of the contents of the card. The WD My Passport Wireless SSD may work quite happily as a wireless or wired storage device for computers, but it’s also designed for those who want to leave their laptop at home and access their content via a smartphone or tablet. While the setup process was easy, as soon as syncing data from my phone got kicked off, it completely froze the WD My Cloud app and crashed it a number of times.

The only thing I don’t like is the size – at about twice to three times the size of an equivalent power bank, this is not a small device to carry around, and it takes up more space in the camera bag.Will have to find out how I will do incremental backup – likely just manual selection based upon date. If this new backup took place on the same day as a previous one, then this new time-stamped folder will be nestled within the existing date folder.

The problem with all of them is that they don’t have built-in storage or power, so you still need to carry a powerbank, more cables and even USB accessories (as in the case of the Raspberry Pi solution in the link). You can either do this using the free WD My Cloud app for Android or iOS smartphones and tablets, or via a web browser on a computer. Sometimes I have my laptop with me at the end of a wedding day, but find that trying to start my backup process with it is inconvenient whilst on the move.
