About this deal

Edgar Degas, Henri Degas and His Niece Lucie Degas, 1875-76, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA. And with so many more examples of the original gimmick -- classic art featuring images of men saying classic nonsense to women who seem to barely be able to contain their irritation, but of course must -- the ratio of perfectly paired images and captions ends up reduced, until one feels like too many of the ones included should have been consigned to the also-ran pile. Obviously, that was not the artist’s original intent, but what is so wonderful about art is that you look at it and put your own lived experiences into it and interpret it that way. These less qualified men of antiquity dish out mediocrity as if it’s pure genius * For the women who have endured overbearing men over the centuries * Written with hilariously painful accuracy”Now, when you’re riding a horse, you need to make sure to keep a good grip on the reins.

The way Men to Avoid in Art and Life was born is a great example of how social networks can be allies of arts and culture, but how does a Twitter thread become a book? Through cringe-induced empathy, these shared experiences unite women across history in one of the most powerful forms of resistance: laughter. One of the images that popped up, which was the first one that I used in the thread, was this painting of a woman holding her bare boob, surrounded by these men. It's interesting to see how many paintings have a female giving that "ykim" stare directly at the viewer (and which are put to good effect here). As an artist, I am always looking to find interesting books about visual arts, design techniques and unique takes on the arts.

The artwork is beautiful, like having the Met Museum in your living room, and the captions are hilarious. In the foreword, Jen Kirkman explains to men that you know that not all men are like the ones that you described in the book. And I think that it’s very cool that my book is giving them this awareness because I’m doing it in a way that we are laughing together about a very common experience; it’s not an attack on anyone.

She said that I was in the newspaper; she showed it to her mom and she laughed a lot, and she hadn’t heard her mom laugh in a long time. Being able to see it from another person’s perspective is so important and it’s something that you don’t do unless you are forced to. This collection of famous art mixed with observations and snarky comments about men gave me quite a few laughs. I enjoyed the creativity, humor and the unmistakable match of punchlines and paintings but I found the book too short and insufficient to satisfy your enthusiasm. Another long time reader who read romance novels in her teens, then took a long break before started back again about 25 years ago. With vague blanket statements like "Twitter is a daily reminder that I'm a woman" and an unnecessary, unfunny tampon joke, I just don't know what the point of her commentary was. What they are really are finely targeted and accurate attacks on men abusing women out of total ignorance.
