About this deal

As the trial of Derek Chauvin unfolds and news reports the death of yet another unarmed Black man shot and killed by police near Minneapolis, there has never been a more urgent need for honest dialogue around race in America. In an effort to equip staff and students with knowledge and awareness around issues of race, racism, racialisation, and where to seek support, we have produced toolkits aimed at both students and staff to initiate conversations and grass-roots anti-racist awareness building as well as institutional strategies to make UCL a race-equitable space where staff and students have equal opportunities and are celebrated no matter what race. This would be great book to start a discussion about race and judging people based on their skin color, hair, clothes, etc.

Let’s Talk Race is for all white people who want to face the challenges of talking about race and working towards justice and equity. Inspired by this initiative, three Wolfson students, Annoa, Raquel and Megan, created a podcast, Shade in Cambridge. He makes the point that race doesn't completely define someone, and that we are all made up of many different stories, many different parts that all make the whole of 'who someone is'. It sounds like a grandpa sitting next to you and talking, just talking -- telling you his wisdom, but never making you feel bad for not already knowing. The ‘Let’s Talk About Race’ series of videos, led by the NHS England and NHS Improvement Midlands Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team, feature stories and lived experiences from colleagues throughout the NHS. Foreword by Kirby McCurtis With the help of this book’s adaptable storytime activities, tools for self-reflection, and discussion starters, children’s librarians will learn how to put anti-racism work into their professional practice while fostering an environment that celebrates all identities.

Document outlining what you can do to become an ally, and how you can use your privilege in a positive way. What a great way to talk about race, or any aspect of a person that makes them feel better than someone else. In a time when we are seeing an increased interest in ancestry with individuals finding out about their heritage with home DNA testing, it is likely that conversations about race, cultural identity and background will become even more popular and interesting. The imagery used throughout the book helps change understand this greater theme of how from many, we are one. The book confronts why white people struggle to talk about race, why we need to own this problem, and how we can learn to do the work ourselves and stop expecting Black people to do it for us.
