About this deal

Love this dram, smoke peat, salt, leather, heather and coastal aromas, in this little storm in a glass. I had to nose to see how the liquid presence remained and there was lemon meringue pie, a touch of cold honey glazed ham with burnt twigs. Both these whiskies scored a 7 in my eyes, but I’ve a stronger preference for the 18 due to the dark and richer character. A recent softly muttered, ‘Jesus Christ…’ in response to peering into the open whisky cupboard was met with a quick subject change.

This award-winning whisky was first matured for 16 years in ex-bourbon casks before being finished for 2 years in the finest sherry casks, giving the whisky delicious sweet and fruity notes. The depth of character and complexity is testament to a well crafted whisky, evident of only the finest ingredients and barrels and also no added colouring and non chilled filtered. In 2007 Burn Stewart reignited Tobermory’s original name under the Ledaig brand, which was launched as a heavily peated 10-year-old single malt in contrast to the unpeated Tobermory. Produced by the Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull, Ledaig is a brand of Island single malt whisky.Finish: A wondrous union of sublimely spicy white pepper, the vibrant sweetness of liquorice and a kick of cloves with a exquisite lingering saltiness. The only whisky distillery on Mull, its main product is Tobermory Single Malt Whisky, and the whisky distillery also produces a smaller amount of peated whisky, which remains known under the former name, Ledaig. Palate: Tantalisingly sweet, medicinal flavours infused with enticing sparks of spicy pepper and dried fruit with rich peaty smoke and a velvety vanilla and malty creaminess.

Distilled using the same pot stills as the classic unpeated Tobermory expression, just with peated barley instead, the whisky boasts plumes of rich, earthy, almost medicinal smoke, with underlying fresh fruit and crushed spice notes. This heavily peated single malt from the Tobermory distillery has been finished in ex-Oloroso Sherry casks. Ledaig's full-on character is a combination of very boisterous wet, earthy peat alongside coastal salinity balanced by a toffee sweetness, but it also frequently has unique layers of rubber, sweet and peppery spices and barbecued meat. Sourness, or sharpness of sherbet; more sharp than lemon, but not overpowering to cause a face spasm. Driven by the variation in whisky and bitten by ‘the bug’ he was unable to resist taking his incessant geeking-out to friends and family.

The 18 is becoming a little bit harder to find these days, I think that’s what swayed me towards a sample of it. Hand selected and hand filled by the team at Tobermory Distillery as part of the Warehouse 1 Collection. The first release from this range was the Rioja Cask Finish , which compliments the smokey Ledaig profile with rich dark fruits.

Made with heavily peated barley before being matured in ex-bourbon casks, and finished in hand-selected Spanish Rioja casks, this single malt contains powerful flavours of smoke, spice, grape and sweet berries, with a lingering saltiness. Unlike its unpeated Tobermory counterpart, Ledaig is known for its robust and smoky character, imbued with the rich, briny flavors of the island.A wondrous union of sublimely spicy white pepper, the vibrant sweetness of liquorice and a kick of cloves with a exquisite lingering saltiness. Overall not quite as good as the 10 in my opinion, but if you want a sweeter islay then this is worth a try. Ledaig whiskies therefore have a smokey and earthy character, as well as fruity and vanilla undertones.
