About this deal

One story features middle aged Laura who inherits a house full of lost objects which she is tasked with reuniting with their owners. Hogan has seamlessly plotted two separate stories, each just as entertaining, while weaving the imagined stories of the lost items throughout. The Keeper of Lost Things” is, in my opinion, a mediocre and sentimental love story that operates with superficial characters and unbelievable scenes. At first, it was somewhat confusing to listen to, as the POVs and storylines change with each chapter. The blue backing really helps everything on it stand out from; the pink roses (some in full bloom and some yet to flower) surrounded by green leaves a single ladybug rests on a leaf and yellow flowers to all the random objects like; a puzzle piece, a button, a key and a locket.

The primary storyline is modern day and revolves around Laura, an assistant to aging author Anthony Peardew.Violence: Some of the short stories are quite dark and there is some implied violence lurking behind the scenes. It's one of those cute, sweet, Hallmark-movie type stories that I wish I did like, but the simpleness and sweetness and the obvious way that everything wraps up perfectly is so implausible that it made me groan in frustration. Mind you this is a book which starts and ends with a biscuit tin full of someone's earthly remains so it is not all sweetness and light!

I am a magpie; always collecting treasures (or ‘junk’ depending on your point of view) and a huge John Betjeman fan. Sunshine places herself at the centre of the action and in many ways she is the inheritor of the title Keeper of Lost Things. I could see how it might be an issue for some as it took me the first two to get the hang of it, but then I really enjoyed it. The story of lost things was intended to be an insight into lost souls and self discovery but we felt that it was a very shallow exploration of this theme. Interlacing plots join this cozy, clever, contemporary English story, unveiling the layers of four lives brought together by the discovery of a biscuit tin full of human ashes found on a train. But once I got the hang of it, especially the back stories on some of the lost items, it clipped along at a nice pace. Ruth Hogan successfully intertwined a number of different stories, including a selection of short stories.

That event has coloured and haunted his entire life, with guilt over a broken promise, a lost communion medal, and led to the enormous collection of lost items which he has found with the hope of reuniting them with their owners. It is “holiday read” material rather than a deep and meaningful work of literature, but I don’t have a problem with that.

Registered office address: Unit 34 Vulcan House Business Centre, Vulcan Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE5 3EF. The wide ranging characters are what really makes the book, including the minor ones like the monstrous Portia and her ghastly novels.

It brings lots of tears, laughs and smiles, which probably made lots of folks on the trail I walk wonder what was going on with me.Sometimes when you are reading a book, you feel you want to join the characters, have some tea and biscuits with them, share their laughter and sorrows and cheer them in their journeys, be a part of them, be with them. Overall, a read I would suggest to anyone who wants a quick, quirky read that will lift their spirits.
