Despite the English ale yeast in its cask version and its heavy hopping rates, Jaipur was a long way from New England-style brewing. That would have meant a stronger beer, a more bitter one, and certainly not one that would have worked on cask—one of the formats in which Thornbridge packaged Jaipur.

A floral, citrusy beer with 60 IBUs was outside the comfort zone of nearly all British beer drinkers in 2005, and at 6%, the higher alcohol duty meant Jaipur was significantly more expensive than anything else on the bar. K.’s craft brewing revolution: the introduction of Small Brewers Relief in 2002, which gave huge tax breaks to microbreweries; the debut of BrewDog’s now-iconic Punk IPA in 2007; the opening of The Kernel Brewery in London in 2010.A relatively early example of an American West Coast IPA first brewed in the countryside of Derbyshire, it became one of the tentpole beers of the UK’s embrace of hoppy American ales. This allowed Thornbridge Brewery to meet with demand they were experiencing and continue to develop and expand their range of beers. The balance they had struck—by putting bold American flavors into a traditional British cask format—was completely novel. It may not have been the first beer to find a way to bridge the two traditions, but it was by far the most prominent and influential.

A much stronger, pure hop smell meets me, like I’m in the brewhouse and things are still fermenting around me. Their first brew was Lord Marples, a 4% classic bitter, which went on to become a core Thornbridge beer.Approx 16-18cm long and 1 cm diameter – straight or slightly curved – dappled with fat and specs of pepper.
