This is a sci-fi/drama, set in the future, that features elements that make use of rich, earth toned colors, boldly applied contrast, and a distinctive visual aesthetic. And truth be told, I thought I was going to have my cake and eat it too with Interstellar because it’s the best of both worlds in my opinion, science fiction and Christopher Nolan, but there are some issues and shortcomings to grapple with here too. I did very much enjoy learning about how all the multiple projectors were employed during the shoot to simulate the galaxy and reflections in the astronaut’s helmets. However, I applaud Nolan here because he sought out to make something big, bold and ambitious and by golly he succeeded, but there is one man’s name shrouded in the shadows here that needs to be thrusted into the spotlight and rightfully recognized for the credit he deserves.Low Frequency Extension: My three canines absolutely hated this surround track as it shook the living room and they were unable to rest comfortably because the LFE subwoofer channel literally rocked the floor in obliteration.

Surround Sound Presentation: The rears are alive throughout from various instances such as whipping wind, sirens and even that tension-filled docking scene. The film might struggle in its third act but in an age of reboots, remarks and sequels, we should applaud original filmmaking. The camera movement just tracks his face but because the camera is too close, his head keeps getting cropped out from the top and below the nose, above the eyes. This marked his first collaboration with cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema, who would later shoot Dunkirk, and the two are both almost equally impressive, with Interstellar particularly benefiting from some jaw-dropping space sequences. In addition to the noteworthy bass response this is an active sound design that makes great use of the entire surround platform.
