About this deal

The hoodie symbolising Dan was such an amazing concept to show everyone had a part of Dan in them and they were also a part of him and… Dan could be anyone. The title Wheeller chose is particularly haunting – they are the last words Dan spoke to his mother before he left home, and they really make an impact.

As a parent of a teenage daughter I try to educate her in the dangers of drugs amongst other things but sometimes feel that I get the “Yeah Mum. This verbatim book draws on the testimony of the many people involved in creating the play, from Dan’s family and friends who gave their words, to the young people and team of Oasis Youth Theatre, who worked with Mark on the original production that became the published play. of students said they'd been given relevant information, 92% said it tackled their misconceptions about drugs, and 86% said it had changed their perceptions of the risks and consequences of using drugs. The upstage screens also projected text message conversations and photographs of Dan throughout which disintegrated into flying sycamore seeds – symbolic of growing goodness from such sadness. Wheeller's latest play, I love you mum, I promise I won't die, is quite different, however, and I found it extremely touching. This play, which runs at around 90 minutes with no interval, is a love letter to Daniel Spargo-Mabbs. Drugs for young people in Scotland are more accessible and affordable than ever, just as in England, and they are exposed to them on an increasingly frequent basis as they go through school. The play tells the tragic, true story of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs from Croydon who died from an accidental MDMA overdose at an illegal rave in 2014. The true story is enacted from verbatim interviews with Dan’s family and friends, curated by author Mark Wheeller into a one hour play, skilfully directed by Elliot Montgomery, artistic director of Tie It Up Theatre, a company which focuses on theatre in education. This first tour to theatres is taking the play to a whole new audience outside schools, where it’s been touring for the last few years.

Most telling of all Amy Zoldan as Alice wrestles with her conscience as the person who everyone blames for Dan’s death. Two of his plays, ‘Hard to Swallow’ and ‘Missing Dan Nolan’, have been set texts on two out of four of the GCSE drama (9-1) specifications from 2016- 2023.

After 33 extraordinary years, Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black will haunt the stage of the Fortune Theatre for the final time, as the production ends in the West End on Saturday 4th March 2023. A talented, creative and “lovely boy” with a passion for helping others who’s always on the side of the underdog.

I Love You, Mum - I Promise I Won't Die’ is a verbatim play by award-winning playwright Mark Wheeller, using the words of Dan’s family and friends to tell his story. The Story of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs, a bright and popular sixteen year old boy from south London who died in January 2014, from ecstasy. The fourth member of the excellent young ensemble, Alex Colley, tends to take the part of Dan, less prominent as Mark interviews the survivors.

Touring for 8 -10 weeks around Central and Southern England, this year is our 4th year and the 7th professional tour around London, Central and the South East. In this, he appears as a character, interviewing Dan's friends and family in the first act (the second act is more intimate and family-centred, telling the story in reverse). The Dan his parents knew was the real Dan, but not the complete Dan, and a wretched mistake ended his life. The title takes Dan’s joking last words to his mum, Fiona, before he left home for what turned out to be the last time: ‘I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won’t Die’. Published by Bloomsbury in 2017, it has been studied and performed by young people across the UK and overseas, with incredible impact. He took eighteen months developing the script and performance with Oasis Youth Theatre, based in Southampton. uk) and over the last 18 months they have worked with playwright Mark Wheeller to have Daniel’s story turned into a verbatim play as a performance to educate young people – they want the production to tour schools so that ‘many good things can come from this very bad thing.
