I have to confess this is the only Cocteau Twins album i have in my vast labyrinth of sounds and in my humble opinion it is my fave album of any moment. The joy of Heaven or Las Vegas is that you don’t need to know what Fraser is saying (even if the few discernible lyrics are immensely personal) to fall into a stupor.

The group earned critical praise for their ethereal, effects-laden sound and the soprano vocals of Fraser, whose lyrics often eschew any recognisable language.

Both following on from the recent reissues of Blue Bell Knoll, Heaven or Las Vegas, Tiny Dynamine / Echoes In A Shallow Bay and The Pink Opaque. The songs “Cherry-coloured funk,” “Pitch the baby,” and “Frou-frou foxes in midsummer fires,” were performed live with new arrangements by Elizabeth Fraser during her Meltdown Festival solo performances in 2012. Breaks my heart too - the Cocteau Twins are my favorite band, but holy s*** - the compression and brickwalling on Iceblink Luck is unforgivable, the entire LP sounds muffled compared to the digital version, and I'm convinced there are stereo balancing issues occurring with the mix in the first track, 'Cherry-coloured Funk'.

Fraser simply captivates; her vocals are the clearest, most direct they've ever been, purring with energy and life. One of the things that’s a stand-out in my memory was a little party we had just at the end, when all the mixing had been done and it had been sequenced—and there was a whole bunch of our mates over [to listen to it for the first time] and part of you is just looking at how they’re reacting… What’s the worst thing in the world? No idea what she's singing about, don't really care, but it's something about being in either Heaven or Las Vegas.This results in an almost infinite sonic template as she uses her wonderfully unique gossamer voice coupled with Robin Guthrie's sublime sequenced guitars and effects with the fluid bass playing of Simon Raymonde and that ever trusty Roland which almost sounds like a real drummer On Ice Blink Luck. Fotzepolitic', electric twelve string guitars or something, almost an electronic acoustic strumming wall of sound. is simply fantastic: on "Cherry-Coloured Funk", Guthrie's inimitable guitar work chimes leading a low-key but forceful rhythm, while Raymonde's grand bass work fleshes it out.Heaven or Las Vegas followed in 1990 and is recognised as their most commercially successful release, reaching number seven in the UK album charts.
