About this deal

We’re taken back to Cleo’s life when she first met Heath, how Trina said he was so ‘intense’ and it evolved over time that his relationship with Cleo in his mind was so magical that he had to do whatever he could to keep her in his life. It must have been difficult to make the transition from 'chick lit' to thriller but the gorgeous Ms Koomson did it with style! There are twists and turns galore, as I’ve come to expect from Koomson, but I did not see the ending coming at all and I was shocked, but in a good way. I appreciated how the theme of obsession was used throughout, but I just wanted to see more from a certain character. There was a lot of angst and emotion in the writing and you fully felt it all - sometimes I wanted to scream at Cleo and ask her what the hell she was doing.

When I finally reached the end, I reread it and it occurred to me that it needed a slower start to get to know the characters properly and take it all in. The many time changes and the different points of view made this difficult to follow at times as I found myself flicking back a few pages to check when the previous chapter was set. But now she has decided to walk away from it all - including divorcing her husband, Wallace - before her past secrets catch up with her. None of the characters were likeable, the story took an age to get going, and the ending was both unbelievable (not in a good way) and disappointing. Bringing it back to present day and Cleo has moved on, she’s now married to Wallace but he’s connected to her past in such a way that it’s impossible that the past will not come back to haunt Cleo. There is plenty of tension and suspenseful moments and some well thought out plot twists as it builds to a very good ending. The twists and turns as everything unfolds was second to none and every time you think you’d worked something out, you hadn’t!

I didn’t know what to expect from this book, I really had no clue what would happen and how it would end. We then go further back in time to 1996 to her days as a student at Leeds University where she becomes best friends with Trina.I loved the alternating timelines that helped build a picture of the complex relationships between the characters over the years but out of all of them I think I loved Lola the most with her witty attitude and sass. I won’t say any more as I don’t want to put spoilers in this review but trust me, this is such a unique story – I haven’t read a thriller with something similar, so good! I took up various temping jobs and eventually got my big break writing, editing and subbing for various women's magazines and national papers. In 2019 Dorothy was awarded the Image Award by The Black British Business Awards to celebrate and honour her achievements.
