After a spell of being aggravatingly out of print, Daft Punk's Discovery finally repressed on their own Daft Life imprint. Doesn't feel like much use reviewing an album this huge, but Discovery is too important to me as a person not to. While Daft Punk's second recording still focuses on the maximum accessibility that earned its debut such high marks, there's less of an obvious focus on pop hooks.This album has some of the most infectious melodies and masterful sample work in the history of music as a whole. It's much poppier than Homework and has most of the hits you might know by them (no "Around the World" though). These guys can go on for hours about who their influences are, and in fact spend much of the album doing so. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" is a resounding standout amidst the retro/Vocoder deluge that transpired after Cher's Believe turned the kitchy disco device into a worldwide pop music trend, spinning a clever groove around an ever-escalating string of computerized seduction. In March 2001, the electronic duo released their second album discovery, a total of 14 tracks, driven by the hit singles one more time, aérodynamic, harder better faster stronger, digital love…a multi-platinum album. Ultimately, Discovery is less of a mission statement than its predecessor, but no less danceable or listenable. I love how shiny it is especially, there's nothing as great as owning a physical copy of an album you love so much in pristine, high quality condition.
