About this deal

The suspense from both timelines held you gripped I literally could not put this book down, an atmospheric, engrossing plot that will keep you guessing. While Elizabeth, the host of Tall Chimneys during WWII, is trying her best to assist those in need, she finds herself caught up in a chain of secrets that could end her life. POV one is for Nancy our main character, having just absconded to her sea side home after the trial of her murderous step-brother. But the end of the trial is just the beginning of a new nightmare for Nancy: the press is rabid, certain that Nancy isn't the grieving daughter she's presenting to the world. I will note that historical fiction is not usually my cup of tea, and I would normally pass on a book identifying itself as historical.

It is a mystery and eventually the two time periods are connected but I would recommend this more for my historical fiction lovers rather than twisty thriller lovers. With all the characters, you confront an intriguing conundrum of who are they really , what is their truth and what cloak of disguise are they wearing? To escape the paparazzi, Nancy leaves her job and flat in London and travels down to Devon to stay in her grandmother's house that she inherited. I didn’t really understand why we had two different plots occurring at the same time but different time frames: one current and one in the past during 1939 in the Second World War, and it’s not until the end where it’s wrapped up together. The present storyline about Nancy and her family was particularly poignant, but for me the characters weaved into the story from the war years is exceptional.Partly set during WW 11 and partly in the present day on the South coast of England this book grabbed me early on and kept me hooked throughout. It takes the most intriguing direction and it leaves you with a multitude of questions which is both fascinating and immersive. I'd happily have read a whole story set in wartime without any need for the present day shenanigans; it was interesting to read how people on the South Coast lived under constant fear of German invasion, and the actions taken to potentially defend themselves - the "secret army" - if it came to pass. The house has clues, the locals have secrets and it seems that virtually everyone that has a connection to her has a little snippet of something that they r not being completely honest about. Her grandmother's beautiful Regency house in a quiet seaside village seems like the safest place to hide.

I wasn’t expecting the lovely folks at Penguin Random House Canada to grant my late request, so I was surprised when less than 24h later, the ARC appeared on my Kindle.I am not sure which section I loved the most as the historical setting was as compelling as the present-day setting. She decides to go and stay at Tall Chimneys, a house in Sidmouth that belonged to her Grandmother and that she has now inherited from her Mother.
