About this deal

Some see The Big Boss as a bit of a rough, scrappy predecessor to his more beloved work that would follow. Colors throughout are richly-saturated and lively with secondary hues boasting a bold, animated selection, especially during the climatic fight in the underground Tower of Death. Like the others above, fans have their pick of three DTS-HD MA mono offerings, and the Mandarin option takes the top choice, delivering excellent, well-prioritized dialogue with a good low-end that adds a satisfying weight to the action and music.

The Dolby Vision HDR presentation also arrives with a spirited, more accurately rendered palette, and facial complexions appear healthy. Throw in a revenge plot against the man responsible for the death of Lee’s sister, a plethora of martial arts superstars to be (Bolo Yeung, Sammo Hung and a young Jackie Chan) ready to fall under the kick of Lee and a vibe ripped straight out of the grindhouse exploitation circuit via mainstream Hollywood (including a funky as all hell Lalo Schifrin score) and its easy to see how the film transcended popular culture to become one of the most influential action films of all time. Others made the most of this unprecedented fame though and countless imitators jumped on the ‘Brucesploitation’ bandwagon. He directed his own action scenes, but was a quasi-director beyond that on all of these, credited or not. All tracks offer up a solid and robust technical presentation – hiss and crackle are eliminated from them all, while stability of the tracks are rock solid.Whilst that series never got off the ground, the screen test for that led to him being cast as Kato in the Green Hornet series.

NEW The Final Game of Death (HD, 223 min) — broken into nine chapters that can be watched individually or in sequence, the incredibly exhaustive documentary studies Lee's life and impact on cinema. Blacks are maybe a little thicker here than expected, possibly as a result in the drop of detail, but while a step down in overall picture terms, given the source’s history (reviews for other releases of the film have noted issues with the picture, but the reasons for which escaped me), it’s still a far from poor image. Doesn't quite excuse the lack of scrapping, but it makes the film that little bit more interesting, despite its often-poor execution. Lee remains unimpeachable – his fights here are the best yet, but his support from Saxon and Kelly seem to suddenly give him what he has so missed from all his earlier films: stars and a film around him to match his intensity, his ability and his megawatt charisma.I know time is against most of us when it comes to watching extras these days, but these four are nigh on essential viewing to get a real feel for the man, his methods and the history of film making in the region at that time. But the part I still find fascinating is the opportunity to compare the legendary martial artist's skills with that of the "Lee-alikes," and well, there is no comparison.

But the rest of the colour scheme is really nice, especially the bright yellow of Lee’s infamous jumpsuit at the film’s finale. Processed in Dolby Vision HDR, the color palette is also greatly improved, animating the action and drama in sumptuously vivid primaries and bold secondary hues, and facial complexions appear healthy and accurate, revealing pores and minor blemishes in the entire cast. NEW Meet the Italian Beauty (HD, 26 min) is a recently recorded interview with actor Malisa Longo reminiscing on the production and working with her husband Riccardo Billi.Cue an introduction of some strange humour, of a semi-love interest, and of name-worthy opponents to pose more of a challenge – for most who haven’t seen the film, they’ll still be aware of Chuck Norris turning up in the third act to be the film’s whole climax with the epic Colosseum-set brawl. As he grew up, Lee was trained in martial arts by his father, who taught him Tai-Chi, and Wong Shun-leung, a student of Master Yip (or Ip) Man, who taught him Wing Chun. We reviewed the Region free UK Ultra HD Blu-rays and region B locked Blu-Rays included in this release release of Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest on a Denon AVR4300 and a 7. Yet, I've never forgotten about the subplot revealing that Han's bodyguard O'Hara (Bob Wall) is the man responsible for the death of Lee's sister, so I keep expecting this story to be a straightforward revenge tale, only to be pleasantly reminded that the script is bit more complicated than that.

A much more western approach – including Hollywood studio backing, crew and crucially distribution – sees Lee star alongside John Saxon and Jim Kelly as they infiltrate the island stronghold of suspected crime lord Han to put his prostitution and drug smuggling racket out of business. The two have different approaches, with Ying-Chieh’s fights being more traditional, whilst Lee’s tear up the rule book.
