About this deal

For a total contrast, listen to the stunning version of the hymn-like ‘Make You Feel My Love’ (take one – CD 3 – 1997) – a song with gospel organ that’s become a standard and has been recorded by the likes of Adele, Billy Joel and Neil Diamond. The previous Bootleg Series, Springtime in New York, suffered from focusing on too wide a time period as well as running too short. But something different happens to “Not Dark Yet” and “Mississippi” when the players fiddle with them: They become different songs. But the story of Fragments—the story of the album Time Out Of Mind isn’t, but almost was—rests with “Mississippi.

It's harder edged which fits the swaggering swing of world weariness tone throughout the album and becomes tender and contemplative at times with reflection.I felt that his voice, which was at one of it's least easy on the ears stages in the mid-1990s, was being propped up, or glossed over, by the production. Disc 5 has all the Time Out Of Mind tracks from the deluxe Tell Tale Signs, Bootleg Series 8 (2008) and has the amazing first takes of Mississippi, Can't Wait, Marching To The City and others. Lanois rarely spoke to Dylan before and after takes, and entire days unfolded in icy, uncomfortable silence. The remaining four discs—two of unreleased outtakes, one previously available, and a live set—repositions Time Out of Mind as a rebirth rather than a farewell. Everyone from Lanois to Dylan to the phalanx of hired guitarists behaved like people gripped by a shared trance.

Time out of Mind"*****, 1997 schon als Alterswerk von der Presse bejubelt, wurde dies von einem damals gerade erst 56-jährigen jungen Mann eingespielt. This latest chapter, officially titled ‘Fragments - Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997): The Bootleg Series Vol.On Disc 2’s take on the folk standard “The Water Is Wide,” Dylan leans into the performance as if he might reach out and touch the shoulder of his beloved. This is one of the most highly anticipated Bootleg Series releases and it follows the evolution of songs written for the album, from intimate early incarnations in the previously unreleased 1996 Teatro sessions through incandescent live renditions showcasing Dylan and his touring ensemble channeling the songs on-stage from 1998-2001. The digital version saved me a lot of money, but I do miss the physical CD’s and more importantly the booklets, a digital booklet would have been handy.
