About this deal

As far as social deduction goes, Bang the Dice Game is probably the most accessible one we’ve looked at because there’s no real way for a proper consensus to emerge. In both, there’s a gunfight in a stereotypical western town: the Sheriff and the Deputies are locked in a battle with the Outlaws, and the Renegade helps both sides to make sure he’s the last one standing when the dust settles. The strategy in this game isn’t really in what you roll, but how you sell it to the other players, doing your best to convince them that it is in their best interests to be shot by you. We also enjoy social deception like coup/ avalon but we dont roleplay and really disliked betrayal at the house on the hill. The arrow tokens go back in the center and those players remove that number of their bullet/life tokens.

As an important lesson on moderation in alcohol consumption, every beer lets you heal any player (including yourself) one health. The different faces on the dice represent a Gatling gun, which hits all other players if you have rolled three of them, a one and two distance attack which attack other players, beer which heals a player, dynamite which cannot be rerolled and will end your turn while inflicting one point of damage if you roll three of them, and arrows which immediately upon rolling them forces you to take an arrow from the middle (you take wounds equal to your number of arrow once the arrow pile is exhausted). If you’re looking for a similar game style but with more complexity, I’d look into Samurai Sword, as it has similar mechanics but with fewer dice, more cards, and a system that mitigates player elimination. The dice are chunky and substantial feeling, with large brightly coloured symbols that are easy to see from any distance. The sheriff and deputies are trying to kill all the outlaws and renegades, the outlaws are trying to kill the sheriff, and the renegades are trying to kill everyone else. Since only the sheriff role is open, you don't know exactly who is helping you and who is hurting you … except through their actions. Or perhaps more accurately, implication seeps into the game and you can do a lot with that in a game designed around social interaction.

We gave it two and a half stars in our review, which is the MLU equivalent of a shrug and a vaguely puzzled look. Join the community and come discuss games like Codenames, Wingspan, Brass, and all your other favorite games! Players will also be dealt a character card that grants the player special abilities to be used in the game. There’s ‘hidden role’ where you each have a secret identity you try to jealously conceal from others. The Bullet comes with a shiny Sheriff’s badge for the Sheriff, and it’s kind of unfortunate that there’s no similar thing for Dice Game owners. The only thing that Bang is going to give you that these other games don’t, and better, is the dice… but dice just don’t work in this kind of game. Why not a game where you actually can work to deduce the hidden roles rather than just roll with them as best you can?

The counterpoint is that it’s very difficult for players to do this with the kind of insinuating insistence you’ll see in other games. You have to take part in a lot of people-reading and making do with the dice that fate sends your way. Play continues until one team meets its winning condition – and death won't necessarily keep you from winning as long as your teammates pull through. The Sheriff has a publicly disclosed role, and their job is to defeat the wrong ‘uns around the table.

You should probably house rule this out, but it’s possible for a particularly unlucky last player to get eliminated without getting a turn if every other player just shoots them. Cowboys, astronauts and dinosaurs, but since no one is rushing to send me a brand new copy of High Noon Space Stegosaurus, let us talk about Bang.
