About this deal

As the nineteenth century wound down, a public inspired by the novel Around the World in Eighty Days clamored for intrepid adventure. by David Damrosch When Jules Verne’s Phileas Fogg circled the world in 1872, he traveled by train, steamship, and elephant; but though international travel is often disrupted today, we can still travel the world through books. Fix confides in Passepartout, who does not believe a word and remains convinced that his master is not a robber. The book Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne had recently been released and was enormously successful, but what if a person could actually make it around the world in fewer than eighty days. Reading is travel – an epic trek, a picaresque pursuit, a lyrical flight – and last year it offered release to those of us still itchy after a daily circuit of the local park.

Each traveler's story is different and Phelan masterfully portrays a unique tone for all three of them, helping us understand their reasons for setting off on such an ambitious quest. With illustrations, infographics, period photography and foldout maps, you'll discover the details of each circumnavigation and how to plan your own trip around the world. For Captain Slocum to live through his journey will, indeed, be a more tenuous task than it was for Thomas Stevens or Nellie Bly, who at least had others to help them, and were in no real danger of losing their lives. During the few hours before their planned departure for Calcutta on the Great India Peninsula Railway, Passepartout visits a Hindu temple on Malabar Hill, unaware that Christians are forbidden to enter and that shoes are not to be worn inside.

Alongside classic facts about nature, history, population, culture, and politics, Around the World’s compelling information graphics thoroughly explain complex processes that impact our lives such as global trade and changing demographics. She notes that dictators know well that whoever weaves the story is in charge, and her fragmented tales work against any monolithic, authoritarian narrative. Concerning the final coup de théâtre, Fogg had thought it was one day later than it actually was because he had forgotten that during his journey, he had added a full day to his clock, at the rate of an hour per 15° of longitude crossed. Passepartout informs Fogg of his mistake and Fogg hurries to the Club just in time to meet his deadline and win the wager. In 1938, a French/English co-production entitled An Indian Fantasy Story featured the wager at the Reform Club and the rescue of the Indian Princess.

Later NPR apologized and corrected the mistake, but clearly our American memory of this crusading investigative reporter are fading. Stops on the trip include the lime trees of Berlin's Unter den Linden boulevard, which intoxicate amorous Germans and hungry bees alike, the swankiest streets in nineteenth-century London, which were paved with Australian eucalyptus wood, and the redwood forests of California, where the secret to the trees' soaring heights can be found in the properties of the tiniest drops of water. From the trees of Britain, to India's sacred banyan tree, they offer us sanctuary and inspiration - not to mention the raw materials for everything from aspirin to maple syrup. A Scott O’Dell Award–winning graphic novelist follows three dauntless adventurers on a Jules Verne–inspired challenge: circling the world, solo. As Judith Schalansky wrote in Atlas of Remote Islands, “Now that it is possible to travel right round the globe, the real challenge lies in staying home and discovering the world from there.Sutherland, John; Sutherland, Lord Northcliffe Professor of Modern English Literature John (21 March 1999). The following evening Fogg apologizes to Aouda for being unable to provide for her comfort as a result of losing the bet. There's something for all types of children, what's important is that they all show tales beyond the familiar. Sir Michael Palin partially attempted to recreate the journey for a documentary series: Around the World in 80 Days with Michael Palin. Damrosch proceeds at a more leisurely pace, though he occasionally makes weightless associative leaps as if hitching a ride in a hot air balloon.

My favorite story would have to be Joshua Slocum's -- not to say Thomas and Nellie's stories weren't entertaining, but Slocum's story is made far more poignant through flashbacks and the main character's struggles with his past and personal demons.Avid cyclists were self-proclaimed "wheelmen", making for a strange spectacle anytime they went out in public riding one of their peculiar bicycle machines. In his April 1873 lecture, "The Meridians and the Calendar", Verne responded to a question about where the change of day occurred since the international date line only became current in 1880 and the Greenwich prime meridian was not adopted internationally until 1884. The use of limited color palettes enhances the artist's characteristic delicate, expressive pen-and-ink drawings without overpowering them, allowing each traveler's character to be the dominant story element: Stevens's optimism and determination, Slocum's loneliness, and Bly's dogged self-reliance.

Titled Around the World in 18 days, the serial told the story of Fogg's descendant, Phileas Fogg III, and his attempt to recreate his grandfather's journey. Passepartout still manages to catch the steamer to Yokohama but cannot inform Fogg that the steamer is leaving the evening before its scheduled departure date. To think that one man could have such an effect, all because of a small idea that kept growing bigger and bigger and the extraordinary efforts of the man who continued to grow along with it.

But instead it just leaves each section feeling a bit watered-down and not quite sure where it's really trying to go. Since 1993, the Jules Verne Trophy has been given to the boat that sails around the world without stopping and with no outside assistance in the shortest time. As it was being published serially for the first time, some readers believed that the journey was actually taking place – bets were placed, and some railway companies and ship liner companies lobbied Verne to appear in the book. Battling their critics, situational obstacles and the limits of human physiological stamina and contemporary technology, Thomas Stevens, Nellie Bly and Joshua Slocum each set out to accomplish a feat that had never been successfully completed.
