This highlights an inconvenient truth around the concept of compact full-frame: you still need relatively large-aperture lenses to achieve most of the real-world photographic advantages that the sensor can provide over smaller formats. For those who are serious video shooters, maybe even aspiring movie makers, the Sony A7C spec sheet once again does have some limitations versus this unique, cinema-oriented full-frame mirrorless camera: the Sigma fp with its 4K RAW video capability. Connection stability when transferring images from the camera to the Creators' App mobile application on a smartphone has been greatly improved. While the sensor size of the FX30 is smaller, it outperforms the A7C in all fields except photography.

Other than the Nikon Z5, the Sony A7C does present a very good value against all of its competitors, despite the ergonomic setbacks. The grip still works OK, but the camera is certainly happiest with small lenses, and feels slightly unbalanced even with the firm’s FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS, which is far from the largest lens it makes.

We also need to adjust to how small the EVF is, roughly APS-C DSLR optical viewfinder size, matching the size of the camera.

The α7C II offers 4K 60p/50p movie capture , S-Cinetone™ for a cinematic look straight out of the camera, and Log shooting for flexible post processing, all within a remarkably compact, lightweight body that's compatible with gimbal or drone-mounted shooting. Design-wise, I can appreciate that there is a nice balance between portability and a decently comfortable grip. As mentioned, this camera's AF system is configurable and it is impossible to test all possible scenarios and all possible AF settings. It does boast weather-proof construction, but from my experience, its exposed front element will just get covered in raindrops unless you source a 40.

I mentioned in previous Sony Alpha reviews that it would be great if Sony could incorporate haptic feedback into the shutter release so that the precise moment of shutter actuation was realized, especially when shooting with the full electronic shutter silent mode. The reduced size makes this a great run-and-gun camera, and when you combine it with some of the smaller lenses from Sony, Sigma, Viltrox, or Tamron, it’s a great combination. This is the most frustrating thing about the camera, and it was why I didn’t take it to Florida on a recent shoot we did because I knew I would have sunglasses on. Located just to the right of the viewfinder is the diopter adjustment and within the eyecup (if it qualifies for that definition) is the eye-detection sensor. Or attach a newly-developed removable grip extension (sold separately) for maximum comfort and minimum fatigue during long shooting sessions.

Sony promises up to 15-stops of dynamic range at low ISO sensitivity for stills, and Sony MILCs, including this one, are highly regarded for their dynamic range. MP is adequate for a large percentage of output requirements, and full-frame sensors capture lots of light, resulting in low noise levels at high ISO settings. The camera boasts many of the core features of the popular Sony A7 III but in a smaller body that adds a fully articulated LCD to a design that resembles Sony’s range of APS-C sensor Alpha bodies. The firm has used a monocoque design, with the main components fixed to the weather-sealed magnesium alloy shell, rather than an internal chassis.
