About this deal

out of 12 masterclass Four Star read, where simmering pain, injustice and most of all revenge, is a slow fire burning. I can’t say it was an explosive moment for me and that’s perhaps because there are many minor twists here and this one sort of melded in with the crowd. Pike makes deft work of these unreliable narrators who span several generations, imbuing their voices with a defensiveness and vulnerability born from past disappointments and trauma. From the first sentence to the last, this explosive, startling novel grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. Published in over fifty languages, it has been a Number 1 bestseller around the world and was a box office hit film starring Emily Blunt.

A Slow Fire Burning is a hugely satisfying, brilliantly crafted novel about the entanglement of betrayal and retaliation, the damage of loss, and how tragedy reverberates in ways we can never expect. A Slow Fire Burning, as the title implies, takes its time with the storytelling, concentrating instead on character back story and motivation.

The title, “A Slow Fire Burning” reflects the emotional simmering of the female characters, all who have reasons for revenge. A Slow Fire Burning is a hugely gripping, character-based thriller, with great writing and brilliant twists.

Although fires are usually ferocious and burn fast, I expected a fast-paced book where I would fly through the pages. A Slow Fire Burning is an atmospheric, suspenseful, psychotic thriller that will have you gripping the edge of your seat.Almost all the characters were damaged but not very likeable and unfortunately I just didn’t engage with any of them. Using a pair of scissors to scrape beneath her fingernails, she watched the water running rosy at her feet. An unflinching look at the damage sparked by grief, loss and betrayal - and the revenge and retribution that ensues. Looking up at the bridge above the canal, she thought she might have seen someone, just for a moment, but then they were gone, and she was alone, gripped by paralyzing fear. Twenty-three-year-old Daniel Sutherland is found stabbed to death on the shabby houseboat where he lived, mere weeks after his alcoholic mother Angela died alone, falling down the stairs.
