About this deal

If you want a compact camera that produces great quality photos without the hassle of changing lenses, there are plenty of choices available for every budget. A 46mm filter thread is supplied, which does not rotate during focusing and the lens does not extend.

I prefer to use the excellent autofocus whenever possible, but the focus ring is easy to use and has a guiding measurement on the top of the lens that shows the focus distance. And after three days of squatting like a frog over flowers and lying against muddy banks to capture dead leaves to the confusion and amusement of those arFor my photography, I can’t imagine the use of the recently announced (in development) Olympus macro “around” 100mm.

Like all lenses, it struggles if it gets too dark, but I find that it keeps focusing in slightly dimmer conditions than my other f/2. I start by carefully moving any vegetation that’s directly blocking my way and begin to visualize my composition. Weighing only 185g this lens is incredibly lightweight and compact when compared to equivalent telephoto macro lenses for 35mm or APS-C system cameras. With this 60mm lens, for example, you can stand as far back as a full-frame photographer with a 120mm macro lens, yet your kit is going to be much lighter. I loved the flexibility of being able to shoot this set-up handheld and was able to get some quite good results. All in all, macro photography (and close-up photography in general) is one of the biggest strengths of the Micro Four Thirds format.

I spent some a few days shooting this lens out on the street and I even did some environmental portraits of my father building my soon-to-be nephew’s crib. It doesn't cost you anything extra when you use these links, but it does support the site, helping keep ePHOTOzine free to use, thank you. Now, I tried to justify the lens to myself by saying it would make a brilliant portrait lens, and I can use it for work for detail shots at weddings. You’ve told your lens you want 1:1, but then you’ve focused on something at a different focal length.

Now, I have no hesitation using fairly slow shutter speeds like 1/20 to create an in-camera focus stacked image like the one illustrated above. There is a link in the 60 mm macro review article to another posting that I wrote shortly after the PRO 90mm f/3.
