Stevenson's father, David Alan Stevenson, a lighthouse engineer who built twenty six lighthouses in and around Scotland, was a first cousin to Robert Louis Stevenson.

That’s an act something a bit out of character for him but the end result (Dorothea accepts) makes them both quite happy. Those of us who work in publishing might seriously question the sanity of anyone trying to escape poverty by writing a novel, but hey, it works for Miss Buncle. Hathaway's (new vicar) uncle, the new vicar has turned over all his wealth and earthly goods to his Uncle Mike for the term of one year to see if he can live on the minute stipend he will be earning in Silverstream.

Having, by her own assessment, no imagination, Miss Buncle decides to simply record the daily life of her small town, changing her neighbors' names but otherwise portraying them faithfully. If you’re in need of taking a nice, long soak of a bath in British sentimentality, this is the book for you. Meek and dowdy Miss Buncle doesn't occur to anyone as a suspect, but how long can she keep her secret?

And then later on in her book she presents a fantasy-land scenario where the different characters do things that are somewhat out of character for them but in which they derive a good deal of satisfaction. Stevenson retrata muy bien la cotidianidad de la vida rural, la tranquilidad que proyecta es sumamente deliciosa y enriquecedora. Because this book is hard to put down--and, despite what Miss Buncle may say, it is truly, truly imaginative. Miss Buncle has portrayed them as they are, and some take offence, particularly those who are not portrayed in a particularly bad light. Her money is drying up—as it is for many of her neighbors—and she has written a novel to rescue herself from poverty.I don't want to spoil the fun by giving away too much, but Barbara Buncle (writing as 'John Smith') finds a publisher and an enthusiastic fan in Mr. Note, the series is often considered a trilogy, but a 4th book, The Four Graces, is loosely connected to the earlier books. Months are then spent trying to find out who John Smith is and when incorrectly identified, the woman is persecuted, snubbed and her children kidnapped. E. Stevenson' page as there is on my copy of Miss Buncle Married where Miss Buncle's Book is referenced).

Miss Buncle is in her late thirties, a perfectly pleasant but rather dull woman, similar in some ways to how I imagine a younger Miss Marple would have looked. There is one instance of a tiny sliver of paper at the outer edge of one page being pulled off onto the page before it, obviously far from the print. When the book is published, it is a great success but doesn’t take long for the village to find out about it and start to try to work out who is responsible. But it's not too sweet--there is enough sharply observant social satire to keep the reader wide awake and enough plot twists so that I was loathe to stop reading even in the midst of a glorious holiday weekend.
