About this deal

Talbot deserves to be recognized with Alan Moore and Frank Miller as a major player in changing the face of comic books during a pivotal time for the industry. Early episodes of The Adventures of Luther Arkwright appeared in the "ground level" anthologies Near Myths and pssst! While in a third existence, I simply pick up the hefty 200+ story, published by Jonathan Cape and dived straight into reading the new adventure, and got blown away, once again, by the imaginary worlds of Luther Arkwright, just as I was when I read the first story in collection from Never Ltd (Serege Boissevain), many, many years ago. Arkwright takes place mainly in a parallel world where the English civil war has been indefinitely prolonged, and Oliver Cromwell still fights on, enabled by the ‘Disruptors’ who are attempting to destabilise the entire mulitiverse… come back non-geeks! The multiverse of Bryan Talbot is similar to that of Moorcock, but unlike Moorcock's setting which had a different Eternal Champion in each parallel, there was only one Luther Arkwright, unique across every parallel.

Of course, since then he has produced amazing and unique works (the tale of one bad rat, grandville, Alice in Sunderland) but this is his pinnacle in my opinion. What can I say about Bryan Talbot‘s new graphic novel, The Legend of Luther Arkwright that might usefully add to the much deserved praise it has already had on release? By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. Weapons, armour, tools, equipment, and various sundry paraphernalia, all given a modern Steampunk twist, including using tech from different parallels. Prophecy says that reality will cease on her 23rd birthday - Victory Day - but with the help of Harry Fairfax and Rose Wylde, Victoria is determined to prevent the new apocalypse.

The book is 160 pages long, printed on slick, shiny (as opposed to glossy) paper in European A4 size (slightly narrower and taller than US Letter size, if I remember right). Complex, adult, wild, deep, dark, glamorous, horrific, fun, sexy, sown with pathos and humour and social comment, mind-expanding in its range of allusion and metaphysical speculation, daring and ambitious and succeeding in its ambitions, it's like nothing in comics before or since and enthralling every step of the way.

Victoria Arkwright is drawn towards destiny as she unravels the dangerous secrets that have remained hidden since her brother’s brutal murder. Luther’s unique status as a traveller between parallel realities and his saviour-like qualities might liken him to Doctor Who – but an R-Rated version, that doesn’t shy away from sex, politics and the grim realities of violence,” Drake added.
