About this deal

I felt a lot of empathy towards Ruskin Splinter who suffers with a lack of love from his parents, bullying from his classmates, and has found one decent friendship in the school's janitor Corky Pigeon.

It started off by being one of the books he's reading for school and doing school work about it and then turned into a story before bed. Discover the joy of reading with us, your trusted source for affordable books that do not compromise on quality. I liked doing the different voices for the characters, the use of the grotesque and cruelty through humour plus the way the author tackles grief and our responses to it. It is based on an adventure story Krindlekrax by Philip Ridley, which tells the tale of Ruskin Spear's quest to become a hero.It was first published in 1991 by Jonathan Cape and republished in 1992 by Red Fox and then again in 2001 by Puffin Books where it is still in print.

Ruskin Splinter is small and thin, with knock-knees, thick glasses and a squeaky voice, and the idea of him taming a dragon makes the whole class laugh.

Ruskin is therefore delighted when Corky tells him the terrifying story of Krindlekrax: the giant crocodile who lives beneath their town's streets.

Although he is very thin with frizzy and think glasses, nine-year-old Ruskin believes he is born to be a hero and sets out to prove it by delivering his beloved Lizard Street from the menace of Krindlekrax. I do think it's one of those where a good title and a healthy dose of hype has helped it into classrooms; there's a strong repetition of Lizard Street sounds and catch phrases which enhances its catchiness.Krindlekrax was one of the books featured and appeared alongside such classics as Roald Dahl's Matilda and J. He was once Ruskin's friend but became Elvis' follower after he grew so tall and always said "Yes Sir!

There's a large and vicious alligator who lives in the sewers,, several caricatured adults (including Ruskin's rather sad parents and his teacher) and a bully who breaks windows and sleep walks. Smarties Prize-winning children's fantasy about the mysterious dragon Krindlekrax who lives beneath the cracked pavements on Lizard Street. Unfortunately for Ruskin, he did not perform to his best and so Elvis got awarded the part of hero for the school play. I imagine they must have done a whole book topic on it, otherwise I cannot understand why it captured their imagination in such a big way.In 2000, to celebrate the new millennium, Hachette Children's Group published Out of this world, a collection of extracts from "the best in 20th century children's literature". Flowers: A man who always has his pockets full of tissues to help with his hay-fever, which causes him to sneeze at regular intervals. Ridley adapted Krindlekrax into a stage play, which premiered at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 2002. Characters in Philip Ridley’s stories usually have catchphrases, and these can become refrains to be joined in with when the books are read aloud.
