About this deal

After the initial meeting of the characters and the first judgements that are made, and past the inevitable sexual tension and awkwardness of having both sexes in such close proximity (because boys and girls are usually kept strictly segregated in institutions), the characters start to realise that the structure they are imprisoned inside is lacking in their most basic needs: water, a safe place to sleep, and food. The last line in the book is one of the more frightening ones in literature, right up there with the last line in 1984.

I was glad to be introduced to William Sleator (1945-2011), but do not think I shall seek out other novels. There are some things that are too important to sacrifice for something as simple and petty as food and acceptance. It is clear from the start that there has been a murder and the murderer is known – she has just been released from prison. Perhaps it is because of its sapphic undertones, or maybe I'm just a sucker for unrequited love stories. The film depicted a distant future where people were required to wear masks by law because of an airborne virus – a frightening prediction of the Covid-19 pandemic 15 years later. Her sense of self-righteousness over the other characters, even though they are all on the same level, seems to be what brings about this attitude. I do love unreliable narrators, but, my, when you keep company with a narrator who is blazingly honest about his hopes, fears, shortcomings etc and shows the reader his wonderful heart, you just surrender and go along for the anxious ride. I had some small gripes like the characters sometimes feel a lot younger than they are, and there’s some gross description of a fat character. While it's a little far fetched that Peter comes out of the stairs not only able to resist the temptation to give in to despair, but as a healthier, more well adjusted person, I think that it makes the book better, and provides some germ of hope that not everyone is doomed to be an Oliver, Abigail, or Blossom.

Hard to know if this book would’ve been one of those banned at my school or just hidden away in a dusty corner. Tremblay garnered international recognition for his breakout performance opposite Brie Larson in the Oscar-nominated film “Room” directed by Lenny Abrahamson.House of Stairs (1974), a science fiction novel by William Sleator, takes place mostly in the peculiar setting of a house of stairs, resembling the visual paradox of the same name designed by M. The house creates an almost disquieting atmosphere: those who live there are exploiting Cosette, and tensions gradually emerge between its tenants. We can hazard guesses through brief glimpses of her present, her ambiguous remarks, such as ‘Bell’s motive for asking those questions was outside the bounds of my imagings’ and ‘[A]s they wished me to do, I was seeing everything inside-out’, and through her carefully paced recounting of those events. At the beginning, Oliver sets out to shame and manipulate insecure, passive Abigail, alternately treating her seductively and indifferently.

I am insanely addicted attracted to stories about "the group in peril", when people are thrust into an alien setting absent of any social rules and obligations. Vine has not only produced a quietly smouldering suspense novel but also presents an accurately atmospheric portrayal of London in the heady 60's.Ruth Rendell, Lady Rendell of Babergh, also known as Barbara Vine, who passed away aged 85 in May 2015, was a literary phenomenon. Now that I've settled this part of my childhood, I can continue reading the metafiction of my agegroup. Combine foreshadowing and flashbacks with the art of deceit and betrayal and the results are this psychological suspense thriller. When the machine starts rewarding violence of the physical and psychological types the kids are pushed to either follow directions of take a stand for what they believe in.

The reading level is definitely leaning that way, but the story goes to darker places than I expected.AC Independent and The Veterans have teamed up on the film adaptation of William Sleator’s cult 1974 science fiction novel “House of Stairs. The novel ends as they emerge into daylight and immediately dance for a streetlight, hoping for it to dispense food. At the beginning of the book she sees her old friend Bell, and follows her at a short distance, not sure it really is her. Nick Shumaker and Noëmie Devide in a joint statement on behalf of Anonymous Content and The Veterans,” said “House of Stairs” “builds on a lineage of Orwellian inspired YA stories from ‘Lord of the Flies’ to ‘Hunger Games.
