About this deal

I just felt that the situations they were in at the beginning felt very contrived and it felt very predictable where the various storylines were headed.

My Hot Friend delves into the implications for all when our mental health is dealt a blow and the subsequent domino effect that can transpire. Lexi co-hosts a successful podcast with her longtime best pal Amanda, but Amanda's tendency to speak off-the-cuff often lands them in hot water in internet-land.This was a bit of a slow burn for me - until the three women’s lives became intermingled, I wasn’t really feeling it but once that kicked in, I was fully invested and couldn’t wait to find out what happened. Lexi starts to realise she should never have mixed business with friendship, but is it too late to save their relationship? Sophie White has written an incredibly raw and real look into what it means to have - and lose - friends as a woman. I am truly a massive Sophie White fan now, I can't wait to read her other works and see what comes next!

Claire has had the same group of friends for years but their whatsapp group is gone very quiet and she knows they talk without her and she's feeling lonely and excluded. This is not the kind of book I would normally pick up, but after how wowed I was by Where I End I was excited to read more of White's work. Sophie has written an amazing book about the importance of friendship and I loved how it highlighted the importance and nuances of female friendship.

At first glance, My Hot Friend has a very commercial fiction vibe to it - bright cover, young characters, themes of mental health, podcasting and online life.I think this is really well done with Joanne's character when none of her friends realise that things have to be planned out in advance when babies are in the picture. However, as I read further on, there were layers to the book that were unexpected, and I found the story both gripping and incredibly poignant. I still haven't recovered from Where I end) Amanda in particular really grated on me I fell in love with Abi's housemates and their tribute band, Slip'not 😂 and being a pretty big Slipknot fan, I really enjoyed this reference 🤣I thought all the different personalities worked really well throughout the book and the interlinking stories kept me turning the pages. Looking through the lens of family, motherhood, mental illness and just general Irish craic, she so brilliantly summarises the overlooked heartbreak of questioning whether the people around really care about you, and whether they want you around. Last we have Claire whose friends (and the WhatsApp name for the group - Bitch Herd - should tip you off to their true nature) seem to be pulling away after an incident the year before which we don't learn the true nature of until the last third of the book.

From the outset, MHF reads like a fast-paced, lighthearted and funny novel influenced heavily by past drama in the Irish influencer scene, but soon evolves into so much more. This book is published 4th May for those who want a funny and blunt portrayal of navigating friendship and more in your thirties. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. The author’s own experiences have obviously informed the plot and the way the characters experience things including mental illness (I gather from the letter at the end of the book which I found very moving) and this brings a genuine-ness to the book that is difficult to get (from my experience of other books dealing with similar issues which I’ve sometimes found either overly glib, unrealistic or just lacking the other brighter moments there are even when suffering. It’s slow moving, but leisurely and never loses its entertaining pace — watching relationships grow and break in real time, and of course some increasingly absurd adventures and antics that made my face ache from smiling. All three women are in situations where they really need some support, but feel that those who they should be able to count on, they no longer can. However, once the girls all meet and become a part of each other’s lives, the story starts to feel more authentic and I found it more enjoyable to read. Overall I enjoyed the touch influencers, podcasts and social media how it can be all glamorous and consuming while also being quite toxic.
