About this deal

When the larvae eat them, the alkaline nature of their digestive system causes these crystals to dissolve and be converted into toxic protein molecules that destroy the inside of the larvae's stomach. I have read on this board that gnats are common in the first few weeks of a new tank and that they will go away on their own eventually.

As I said earlier the product/chemical used in the study cited is NOT the product/bacterium I was referring to. Note: BTi is considered not harmful against humans and children, and is widely considered the organic choice to control fungus gnats. I live in apartment and I have about 46 plants and the pretty annoying gnat problem I've tried the wine vinegar drying out my soil putting dish soap in the water some kind of bug killer spray for plants I bought and I just most recently bought bti mosquito bits from Home Depot I sprinkled them in my plants and I put some in my water for watering the plants. Mortality was observed when woodlice received a topical application of the highest concentration of liquid Bti, but not at lower concentrations, nor when exposed via contaminated food or contaminated substrates.

These spores and crystals must be ingested by the immature feeding stage of development (larval) of insects to be effective . After all, the point of growing these plants is for me to clear the air, and the last thing I need is for my plants and soil to be poisoning me. Fungus gnat larvae generally respond to Gnatrol WDG treatment within 24 hours following applications.

Gnatrol offers highly selective, effective control of fungus gnat larvae, especially for those growers concerned with worker safety, the environment and resistance management. You'll find that most of us here are very conservative when it comes to risk to frogs, so even a link to harm is enough of a red light. Although adult fungus gnats are a nuisance to people, they don't damage plants or bite humans or animals. The product is now available in a water-dispersible granule (WDG) formulation that leaves no residue and is easier to measure, ensuring increased application accuracy. In fact, Bti is used in mass quantities by cities and municipalities worldwide to control mosquito populations.

Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis strain AM 65-52 solids, spores and insecticidal toxins 37. A LD50 study (by definition is going to kill half the test animals) is not an appropriate indicator for health effects if a normal dosage is expected. First of all, what they sell isn't live, viable bacteria; the toxicant that kills the larvae is actually a part of the Bti spore .

Regular follow-up applications using the suggested light infestations rates, will establish a long-term maintenance program. I finally have them under control in my houseplants using Gnatrol ( bacillus thuringiensis ) a bacterial larvicide, and am working up the nerve to use it in the millipede tank. This versatile product can be used on a wide variety of ornamentals, as well as all bulb crops, bedding plants, and vegetable sets.Chameleon boards anectdote (2014) -- " The mini culture of springtails in the BTI water is doing great, reproducing normally, and hasn't had any ill effects that I can see. Fungus gnat larvae generally respond to Gnatrol WDG treatment within 24 hours following application. UC IPM Fungus Gnat factsheet -- " Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (Bti) (Gnatrol) -- Bti applied at labeled rates provides temporary control and is toxic only to fly larvae, such as mosquitoes, black flies, and fungus gnats.

Subacute effects of transgenic crylab bacillus thuringiensis corn litter on the isopods Trachelipus rathkii and armadillidium nasatum (2006) -- " These results indicate that little hazard to T. Because the larvae attack the roots, the plants cannot obtain the nutrients that are needed to grow and will start to wilt. In situations where all life forms (eggs, larvae, pupae and adults) are present, such as with existing infestations, make three (3) weekly applications at the suggested range rate for heavy infestations. The infestation for that had gotten so bad that I enclosed it into two sandwich bag, partially to serve as a greenhouse, but partially because there were so many gnats coming out of this plant it was clear that the roots were thoroughly infested. It's great to 'cycle' if you start getting gnats but it's not a systemic or chemical pesticide that stays effective much past its application.

I read threads that mentioned gnats as a temporary nuisance but I wonder if that is because dart frogs will eat them! They especially threaten seedlings and immature plants and can even cause massive plant death in severe infestations. It sounds a little nasty, but every morning I'd see new gnats buzzing around in the bag and then squash them. I brought home a houseplant with fungus gnat hitchhikers and over the course of a few months, they've spread to the rest of my plants and into my millipede terrarium.
