About this deal

If you live in a period home with original wood flooring you may know how draughty these gaps can be, but you might still be surprised to know just how much heat is being lost through the spaces between your floorboards. This has made some difference, as have the thick interlined curtains (bay window) but there is literally wind whistling up into the room and I'm freezing cold.

If you put some kind of squashy draught excluder on the skirting bottom edge, I can't see that being a problem. Floorboards are usually secured with long nails or clouts and it is all too easy to damage floorboards as they are lifted, particularly if they are worn. I only mention it because we had our chimney swept a few weeks ago with a view to starting using the fireplace again, and the sweep mentioned that if we were going to carpet the room we should have an additional vent installed in the floor.

For a more efficient, but costlier method of draught proofing underneath your carpet, you can apply a gunned silicone sealant to the gaps between the floorboards provided the gaps aren’t enormous! Pine slivers are probably the pinnacle of draught-proofing techniques for floorboards, fitting in as flawlessly as possible with a very long life. Somewhere I've seen V-section seals for variable gaps between floorboards, they are pushed into place with a blunt blade or credit card etc. Once you’ve got an apron on and ready to get messy, tear up newspaper into shreds and mix it with the wallpaper paste leaving it for a few minutes to absorb the glue.

I was thinking of overboarding the floorboards still, either using 3mm hardboard (cheapest) or 6mm exterior grade ply.mean a void space below them that is effectively open ('ish) to the outside atmosphere through air bricks etc. These specific flooring fillers have been specially designed to give a long-lasting finish and with a good range of colours so you can match it to the shade or stain of your floors.

It comes on a tiny roll and, once pushed firmly down into the gap with a credit card, it’s invisible. The ingenious design plugs gaps of varying widths between 1mm and 8mm and won’t drop out when the boards shrink in hot weather. With so many products on the market, it is important to select one that will provide you with the best outcome for your specific requirements. If you're an Easyjet passenger who was issued a voucher during the Covid-19 pandemic, you've just days left to use it before it expires by the end of Wednesday 31 January. It can also be compressed into floor gaps much smaller than its original profile, enabling you to fill even the smallest of gaps in floorboards.
