That she uses this position in the King’s court and pretends to be Clytemnestra’s friend and confidante gives her motives for initially aiding the unwilling queen in attempting to rid herself of the child she doesn’t want but was forced on her.

For fans of Madeline Miller , a stunning debut following Clytemnestra, the most notorious villainess of the ancient world and the events that forged her into the legendary queen. Growing up as a princess of Sparta, she was privy to the horrors of war and the brutality of men, especially that of her father and brothers. The character development was great, there were many sides to the characters especially Clytemnestra and Agamemnon. Casati’s novel retells the story of Helen of Troy’s twin sister, Clytemnestra — a strong warrior, mother, and queen with a knack for survival.I paired my reading with the excellent audio narration by Olivia Vinall which truly enhanced my experience.

Bold and elegant , this novel deconstructs Clytemnestra's infamy and then, with tremendous empathy and wisdom, reconstructs her into an enthrallingly complex figure filled with passion and spirit . BookBrowse seeks out and recommends the best in contemporary fiction and nonfiction—books that not only engage and entertain but also deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.While I knew the ins and outs of this story fairly well, I found that knowledge only added to my experience with the book instead of making me impatient in any way. Beautifully told in a style that pays nimble homage to classic Greek mythology, Clytemnestra is a rich and compelling read, and even more so for every woman who has ever had to fight to reclaim her power.

About the Author: Susan C Wilson has a degree in journalism from Edinburgh Napier University and a diploma in classical studies from the Open University. You who perceive me in such an odious manner do little but speculate, ponder, wonder, like a child yet you do not know me as you should. When I finished this book I wanted to know more and was glad to find A Spartan's Sorrow by Hannah Lynn to fill in more details of her life and the legend she is part of. The pacing here was very well done; for an over 400 page book on such a familiar story, I never felt as if it were dragging in any way. And the story of her parents are very important to the girl, her heritage, reminding her forever of where she came from and what she carries in her veins, not just the royalty, but the strength, endurance, and fortitude to be great, the greatest of all others.Ablaze with moments of deep tenderness and visceral ferocity , Casati's Clytemnestra gives the phrase 'fight like a girl' its rightfully heroic and empowering meaning! From the very start, there was something about her that felt as though she shouldn’t be trusted and for her to be shown as the mother of Agamemnon’s firstborn son.

When the Greek forces led by Agamemnon are stalled, he sacrifices their daughter, Iphigenia, believing that doing so will appease the gods, who will then unleash the winds needed for the army’s ships to sail to Troy so that the abducted Helen can be rescued. Crafted with page-turning suspense, Casati spins a mesmerizing story of an ambitious warrior queen who must use all her skill to protect herself and those she loves from men who view women not as equals, but as pawns to be sacrificed upon the altars of lust, greed, and fame. She is frequently viewed with hatred, and as her claim to fame was murdering her husband, King Agamemnon, after he had been away at war for ten years, this is an understandable stance to take on the surface. Two more tubs are ready beside her, filled to the brim with water, and behind them an old servant woman is preparing soap.

The usually lauded hero reveals unfathomable depths of cruelty and violence in scenes that made my stomach spin. Like her sister, Helen was a character given so much more depth and nuance than in the original tale.
