About this deal

The only trouble is I only read a few lines of the bible now before I get side tracked delving into that verse, i. Unfortunately, I fear we might be waiting at least another ten years for that, as they have only completed Genesis and Exodus so far. I come to this, then, as a non-believer, but as a non-believer who's interested in understanding this text from a believing Catholic perspective. The Preface indicates that this is the first time such a tool indexing the Scriptures to the entire body of current liturgical texts has been undertaken. The Ignatius Bible 2nd edition is a hybrid text, updating only a few dozen readings from the RSV1971, while retaining many of the original readings from RSV1952.

Yes, this is a Catholic edition and the Catholic public is likely the main audience, but as non-Catholic reader I found that the comments were insightful and not sectarian. There are word studies, quotes from saints, explanatory notes, background essays, discussions of different phrasing used depending on translation. He teaches theology and Scripture at the Franciscan University of Steubenville and has published several best-selling books, including Rome Sweet Home , The Lamb's Supper , and the Catholic Bible Dictionary .Unfortunately, only the New Testament is currently available as a single volume (don’t let the size fool you! For anyone interested in beginning or continuing their adventure of faith, I highly recommend this faithful and powerful presentation of the Word of God. I pushed through a little to try and make it happen every month as I have for a long time followed the daily mass readings but find it insufficient to gain the familiarity and mastery of God's word that I have been looking to develop.

I really like the format, and the notes are SUCH a breath of fresh air compared with the notes in the New American Bible, which seem to go out of their way to disprove the Bible. I received a parcel from Oxford containing two of its published books, the Oxford Catholic Study Bible (softcover) and the Oxford Bible Atlas. It contains more comments, brief essays, and other helps within the text sections than does the other Oxford edition, but the bulk of the editorial material is still the Reader’s Guide section. In addition to the notes, topical essays and word studies include interpretations from the Fathers of the Church, the Catholic Magisterium, and faithful Catholic scholars. If there's room on the desk for a Jerusalem Study Bible The New Jerusalem Bible: Study Edition (Bible Njb) you may enjoy looking at the differences in the translations and the different approach to study notes. Although it is not marketed as such, the New Jerusalem Bible contains many common features of study bibles.

Thruout, there are regular cross-references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: I can imagine this Bible being used very effectively alongside a catechism (most easily the CCC) in an adult catechistic class or in a very focused CCD. It is an off-white cream, and the typeset is more than adequate for comfortable reading; there is no bleedthrough. I will comment on both the translations as well as the study tools they incorporate, with an emphasis on the quality of the commentaries/notes. Interestingly, there are many references to scripture in the CCC which are not echoed in this study Bible.

Catholic or ecumenical study Bible editions are lacking for other current Catholic translations such as the RNJB, NCB, and ESV-CE, although study editions exist of the standard 66-book abridged canon ESV. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. The text is that of the Second Catholic Edition of the Revised Standard Version—a revision of a revision of a revision of a revision of a revision of the King James Version of the Bible.
