The ending of the book, I won’t spoil it, you’ll have to read it yourself, was a really interesting way to go with handling the whodunit portion and the position it put Harlow in.And as The Witch is a “New England Folktale,” wherein the events occur just how a Puritan would assume witchcraft works, so too are the Devil’s greatest temptations. She’d ask for a positive ID from grandma before popping the orange jelly fungus in her mouth again and again. She tried various remedies including trying to churn the butter herself while whispering an incantation, as well as drawing a circle around the churn and washing it out with south-running water. That year the talk was again rife on the lips of the townsfolk, about the older women who had been accused in this second wave of persecution to drive out the Devil.

Beltane is particularly associated with fire, and special fires that were lit at midnight on the 30 th April, these were thought to have special protective powers, including the flames the smoke and the ash.Romance certainly isn't on the cards either but the hot scruffy guy new to town seems to have other ideas. I wasn't overly keen on this to be honest but it picked up reasonably in the last quarter, hence three stars.

The characters are fun and memorable, particularly Harlow, and all of the family members stand out as individuals. As with a lot of families, their mothers all want them to get married and give them grandchildren, so any socializing has to be done on the sly. I genuinely don’t know, but thinking about the remoteness of the communities where this type of custom was common, I doubt that it was a recent thing. Maybe that’s one of the way’s it impacts the lungs, as it’s supposed to be like a vicks vapor rub thing as a lung issue medicinal mushroom, but as to the specifics of that I really don’t know.Disclaimer: I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author in exchange for an unbiased review.
