About this deal

I especially enjoyed Mel and her story of becoming more and more obsessed with Alex, to the point that she wants to enact revenge on her behalf. She is stuck, buried underneath all her grief and regret, unable and unwilling to try and let go of them. I liked the writing and the pacing and found myself staying interested in the story and finishing it fairly quickly. With judicious editing, both novellas that makes up The Furies could have been tightened up to make two short stories as part of his Nocturnes series.

It highlights how, from a cellular level, the most basic minute way, we were indoctrinated to make ourselves occupy as small a space as possible because that is how the world is. He is able now to visualise and even travel among the filaments of energies that power all existence: the furies. Furies is a starry collection, with new stories by four-time Booker-nominated Ali Smith, Emma Donoghue – whose novel Room was adapted into a hit Hollywood film – Margaret Atwood and Women’s prize for fiction-winner Kamila Shamsie, among others. He was a delightful middle aged man, former actor turned principal of this schooling Unit, and he was just genuinely in it to help the kids and give people a second chance. Where it didn't quite live up to what I wanted was the darker aspects of the plot, and the crime itself; it was a little underwhelming and I had hoped for her to go a lot deeper into the themes and craft a dark, disturbing experience of literature.Hava, whose gift for piracy has won her the name of 'Sea Demon', is closing in on the whereabouts of those who unleashed the murderous hordes. Publication information is for the USA, and (unless stated otherwise) represents the first print edition.

The Amber Fury is a book I remembered fondly and have long considered a favourite, despite the fact that my review at the time – published on my now-defunct blog – contained quite a lot of criticism. This book did incorporate her love and understanding of Greek tragedy well, and found me interested in reading the plays talked about that I haven't read yet. I liked how Natalie Haynes incorporated the tragedies into this modern story and plot line, and my favorite scenes in the book were always the ones where Alex discussed the plays they were reading with her students. Published with an endorsement on the cover from S J Watson, The Amber Fury is being billed as a 'thriller' and a 'page-turner'. Only when it’s too late does she realize what has been unleashed by the volatile mixture of troubled teens and themes of vengeance, justice and fate.
