If the coffee beans are very finely ground you will have a stronger taste and if the grind is coarser you will have a milder taste. We do not recommend the use of highly filtered, de-mineralised or distilled water as this may affect the taste of the coffee and how the espresso machine is designed to function. The machine will indicate it is ready for descaling when the POWER button, 1 CUP button, CLEAN ME indicator and HOT WATER / STEAM indicator are all illuminated (solid on). I was looking at purchasing the Sage Duo Temp Pro, but then figured I would want/need a grinder on top too.

What I'd say about this, is that while it's true that there are some parts for the Barista Express which are harder to get hold of, some of the more commonly required parts including the pump, the solenoid valve, rubber seals, and so on are standard parts, and they can be more economical to fix if you seek out a local espresso machine engineer. Use the pin on the end of the provided cleaning tool to unblock the hole(s) before re-attaching to the steam wand. The group head interior and shower screen should be wiped with a damp cloth to remove any ground coffee particles. I’ve tried their new Virtuo pods, but they’re excessively caffeine oriented and not as good flavours as the old original pods.The only downside with the Barista Express is its identity crisis – it is a fairly manual machine and so not really an ‘express’ BTC coffee maker in my view. Press and hold the 2 CUP button and then press and hold the POWER button simultaneously to enter the Descale mode. I think that a huge percentage of the mainstream coffee drinkers who fall somewhere within the two extremes I've just described would probably be best suited to the Barista Express if they're looking for the best combination of cup quality and value for money.

Insert the portafilter into the group head and rotate the handle towards the centre until resistance is felt.

As to the product, it works great with no issues, so, for what is a refurbished model, thumbs up for a great job guys. So far so good, item arrived really well packaged and the machine has been used for several coffees. I just can't fathom why they'd give this machine, a traditional portafilter espresso machine, less grind settings than they give all of their bean to cup machines, very odd!

You get a 2 year refund or replacement warranty from Sage, and this is great if your machine does develop an issue within 2 years. This isn’t through any fault of the machines – indeed the grinder is good and efficient, the brewing of the coffee is good, with the pre-infusion process doing a sterling job in drawing out the flavour of the beans and the steam wand does exactly what a steam wand should. Pressing the 1 CUP or 2 CUP button during a preset shot volume will immediately stop the extraction.
