About this deal

An Honest Man was featured as one of the best novels of 2019 in The Sunday Times, the Financial Times and The Times Literary Supplement.

He isn't always kind, but as he gets comfortable with identities that distinguish him from the rest of his friend group, you do feel pulled into his story. You will recognize some well worn themes but Koryta makes you root for the characters to overcome all the obstacles placed in front of them. This is mostly a coming of age story, with an espionage subplot that weaves in and out of the events of Ralf and his family, before the book reaches a thrilling twist and a moving conclusion.Once she sees Lyman is no threat, she allows him to care for her and the various bloody wounds on her body. Despite a lack of evidence, Sterling Pike, Israel’s uncle and the island’s sole police deputy, immediately blames his nephew, who was convicted of murdering his own father 15 years earlier. I love novels where characters can evolve, can tell a story that draws me deep into it, and that makes me long for those fictional people and their stories the moment I read the last lines of the book. Set towards the end of 1962, Charles debts are mounting up and he is not getting any work as a barrister and as the costs associated with his chambers are one of his debts he is considering giving it all up when he is asked to represent this other barrister who has been arrested and charged with with very serious crimes.

One thing that stood out to me too was the revelation that people aren’t necessarily who we know them to be. At the beginning of this superb thriller from Edgar winner Koryta ( Those Who Wish Me Dead), recently paroled killer Israel Pike discovers seven murdered men on a yacht adrift near the small island of Salvation Point, Maine. When a shocking discovery jeopardises what little normalcy his life contained, Ralf becomes further enmeshed in a web of deceit. This one involves a twelve-year-old boy named Lyman Rankin who lives on Salvation Island with his violent and angry father. The book starts with the languorous nonchalance of the hot 1989 Berlin summer it is set in and torpor seems always about to strike but slowly the plot catches pace to an almost satisfying ending. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Israel just got released from a 15-year prison stint on a manslaughter rap. Ralf’s emerging love affair is a relatively sudden but very passionate one that is quite well described so that the reader might identify with his feelings, needs and new experiences though it all initially occurs within a fairly short time frame and an awareness of possible cracks is subtly indicated.

Nonethelss, ss well as a poignant love story, this novel is also a compelling, original thriller; with a not so predictable final twist that sets a powerful climax in motion just as the Wall comes down. The story is told by Ralf, the German-British narrator and main character, looking back at the summer of 1989 in (West) Berlin when he was 18, expecting his Abitur results to decide which university he should choose to attend Geology; go to England, his maternal family country, or stay in Germany and close to his friends and family. There are a few elements of the plot that don't come as huge surprises when they finally happen but others are much more unexpected. Not quite halfway through, you will begin to worry and desperately hope events will work out for our hero as he accidentally becomes involved in espionage between east and west that threatens him and his family. Me gustó mucho el libro, la narración es brillante, la historia está muy bien hilada y los personajes son muy creíbles. The zeitgeist of 1989 comes through very well, captured through portraying particular West Berlin streets/neighbourhoods and what they represented at that time, along with cultural touchstones.

Israel is instantly a suspect and is interrogated by his corrupt uncle who is the assistant sheriff who has bought half the island. Of course, in the background, is the fracturing of Communism and the events leading up to November 1989, when the checkpoints in Berlin were opened and the process that ultimately led to the reunification of Germany was begun. These three lives will converge in a race for survival—hampered by the island’s dense vegetation, unpredictable weather, and their own self-esteem. However, that reason may unravel at a frightening speed after Israel is the one to discover and report the death of 7 men on a yacht to the local sheriff who despises him, his father’s brother. From the New York Times bestselling author of Those Who Wish Me The murder of several politicians at sea has shattering implications for a local lobsterman and a young boy in this action-packed thriller. At times I felt I could see exactly what Fergusson was doing, but I willingly went with it, and was rewarded . His uncle Sterling, who most assuredly knows something about what happened here, has a vendetta against Israel setting into place a manhunt across the island. As Israel steps up to try and help Hatchet and Lyman escape the trouble both of them are in and in the end the island Israel puts his own life in danger trying to do what he thinks is the right thing. An Honest Man", written by Simon Michael and published in paperback by Urbane Publications on 7 July 2016.
