About this deal

With a view towards walking The Ridgeway in May [yes, I’m actually going to do it, this year], I recently started looking back over the kit I intend to carry with me. The outward pressure on the valve is such that you can't remove your mouth from it for an instant - some other blow-up valves are a bit more relaxed in terms of the amount of air they let out. I could place a roll mat of some sort underneath, which could help to protect the inflated mat from a risk of puncture and improve upon the thermal insulation value.

We also love the soft-touch upper of the comfort mat, which helps sleeping bags stop sliding off in the middle of the night.Meanwhile, family and car campers can pack something bigger and bulkier that offers great comfort, or even go for a double camping mat that two adults can share. Nevertheless we've found it warm enough for cold camping, though we would probably draw the line at just below zero rather than the extreme cold of a hard winter. This makes it a good choice for multi-day hikes, when you don’t want to add too much weight to your backpack but also need a comfy mat to ensure you’re well rested on your adventures.

Medium might be the smallest, but at 183cm long it's exactly the same length as our 6-foot reviewer; anyone much shorter than this is going to have some spare mat to play with (and carry). On the strength of our experience, this mat should be more than adequate for most mountain and cold weather use worldwide. Also, since using a snugpak stratosphere, there is not much more width it would take maybe 8-10 inches spare. This operates with a simple pull mechanism, and can also be twisted to lock it closed so there's no danger of accidental deflation in the night. THERMOLITE® HL-1 high loft insulation is a fiberfill constructed with a unique 3D crimp of hollow-core and solid fibers, which provide excellent lightweight warmth with superior durability. At 1kg it isn’t prohibitively heavy and it also deflates easily before packing away into a backpack. This mummy-shaped design reduces unnecessary weight and packed size, and if you're on the move every night or only out on a short trip then that's a definite plus. This bright yellow mat is very lightweight at 377g, packs down small and offers solid quality, night after night.

Although, it is worth mentioning that this mat isn’t as thick as some premium double designs at 7cm, so if you’re looking for an alternative to your bed at home, pick a thicker pad.An anti-microbial treatment on the fabric helps prevent mould or fungal growth inside, something of a risk with any mat that gets puffed up full of damp breath. On a previous review some years ago we managed to tear the identical fabric of another Exped DownMat model surprisingly easily, and since then would always carry the repair pack that comes supplied - it fits in a sleeve in the stuffsack, it doesn't weigh much, and it's easily used even in a tent.
