About this deal

Add the ROG Aura RGB functionality into the mix and it makes this even more attractive, but does it have enough in the tank to secure any awards today? From overclocking, to temperature monitoring and fan twiddling, you really can get everything out of this board with great debugging and safeguarding features. The heat sinks are very nice, and I like how ASUS tries to tease you with the slight cutouts on the shield around the audio.

All these are paramount to overclockers and can provide solace on open air test benches/cases without working buttons. This Maximus VIII is from Asus' Hero line, which is a motherboard that has been optimised and honed for perfectly-balanced enthusiast-grade, gaming desktops. ASUS uses its Extreme Engine Digi+ power supply circuitry to manage the power sent to the CPU and DRAM. Meet ASUS Pro Clock, a dedicated base-clock (BCLK) generator designed for 6th-generation Intel® processors that ramps BCLK frequencies up to 400MHz or even beyond*.Today, we have millions of users a month from around the world, and assess more than 1,000 products a year. It offers five more superb audio controls, including Reverb, Bass Boost, Equalizer, Voice Clarity and Smart EQ — ensuring that everything you hear sounds just amazing. ASUS utilise a 5-way optimisation system that allows you to hit single buttons to tune complex settings - for example, highly-controllable performance boosts! Left to right on the bottom is the front panel audio header; Thunderbolt header; Start, Reset, and CMOS clear buttons; TPM header; and the ROG extension header for use with the ASUS OC Panel if you have one or purchase one. There are three of the latter in total, with your typical two-way GPU setup getting a x8/x8 lane configuration courtesy of the two grey slots, which are double-spaced to aid air-cooled cards.

On the hardware side are some ASUS staples like the Q- Connector; Q-Shield to minimize EFI emissions through the I/O; SATA 6Gbps cables for your disk drives, including several with 90 degree ends; and an SLI bridge connection. However, I believe that ASUS designed this board to be kind of like a barebones overclocker, and overclockers prefer chipset IO to hubs and controllers, and in that regard the USB 2. With its gaming-orientated styling and focus on overclocking capabilities, how does Asus' Maximus VIII Hero fair in our test suite?

A larger difference in temperature between the back and front of the PCB points towards a more effective heat sink. ASUS did an excellent job with aesthetics, but you won't get to see all of it until you turn the motherboard on.The motherboard also features ASUS’s DIP 5 (Dual Intelligent Processors 5) and this comes with quite literally every software available for your board. Whether you're a PC novice or a seasoned overclocker, the EZ and Advanced Modes help you find your way, quickly and easily. Advanced fan and water-pump controls for ultimate cooling and quietness with onboard thermal sensors and hardware-level 4-pin PWM/3-pin DC mode detection, Fan Xpert 3 makes sure every fan achieves the best balance of cooling performance and low noise! That voltage is logged by a National Instruments ADC which logs the DC voltage level, which I then convert into current.
