I’m now 9 weeks in and with the power of hindsight I’d say I should only have bought some Mam bottles and a steriliser.

Claire: Although my son is older and we are using it from now, this would have been a real time saver from when he was born. I am a fan of the steam steriliser as I do not need to worry about germs on my babies teething toys or bottles and it's a natural method to sterilise items. These models are super-efficient and often save you time, as the motor does all the pumping for you. It’s worth noting that the machine doesn’t indicate the time left – you need to keep track of this yourself ­– but it does flash when it is working. Using it just as a microwave steriliser is fine, it fits perfectly in my standard flatbed microwave so I’m not sure why people have problems with the size?This was very annoying, as I had to discard the food as it was too watery and made a lot of mess feeding the baby! The MAM bottle was also especially convenient because of the ability to be sterilized alone in the microwave. The electric steriliser only takes 7 minutes to sterilise; it takes 2 and a half minutes to warm up a bottle of milk and 10 minutes to defrost breast milk. Trying to work it out with the table in the instructions booklet requires a strong pair of glasses and a degree. This isn’t like other sterilisers where you have a specific place for the bottles/teats etc, it all just kind of gets chucked in and the bottles lay flat rather than upright. This starter set comes with teat size 1, however there is a size 0 available for smaller babies or babies who are slower feeders. and just in case any new mums are reading this- try your baby with refrigerated/room temperature milk first.

The other functions of the product (bottle warmer and defrost setting) means it grows with the baby as when you stop needing to sterilise bottles you can continue to use the product, making it more convenient for the mother. With the pump, we also got the electric one and it's really quite, I can sleep through it, relatively quick, roughly 15-30 mins per boob, battery roughly lasts about 4-5 sessions depending on what pump setting you choose, all I a good all round electric pump, even better when you combine the bottles and storage containers. Because for us, there is nothing more worthwhile than supporting the healthy development of babies and making parents’ daily life easier. The design of the steriliser is perfect and easy to clean also it’s very hygienic as it makes the bottles stay disinfected for longer period of time. I would describe ours as medium capacity and there are only a few centimeters on either side of the device when in the microwave.

The ‘keep warm’ function – that heats bottles to the ideal temperature for up to 45 minutes before shutting down – is great for when you get distracted with a nappy change mid bottle-making. If you start with bottles from the beginning it's important to have a steriliser you can fully rely on. It can be used as a steriliser (either electric, cold water or using microwave steam), a bottle warmer or food warmer for when you’re weaning.

Also the products let off a lot of steam and can make the kitchen quite wet, I feel the bottle warmer needs a cover over it. Once you've washed and cleaned your breastfeeding pumps, baby bottles, soothers, lids, teats and bottle accessories and milk and powder storage containers, transfer them into your steriliser where bacteria's killed with high-temperature steam. To me, it seemed quite wide and I felt it was large in terms of circumference, although compared to other multi-function sterilisers, it’s actually very average in size. Or if they just provided you with a little plastic measuring cup or something for the correct amount of water, otherwise it’s a bit of a guessing game 🤷🏻‍♀️ The bottles don’t have the right measurements marked on them to use them to fill it unfortunately. Having welcomed our lockdown baby Violet Hope right at the height of the coronavirus pandemic and with her brother and sisters going back to school and nursery as lockdown is lifted my number one priority now is making sure everything at home is as clean as it possibly can be.
