It was so heartbreakingly beautiful and was similar to It Ends With Us as they both have the topic of Domestic Violence. She is without doubt the character at the heart of the narrative and the emotional layers that are in glorious abundance in this story.Kennedy Ryan has a way with words and when I listened to this book in audio, the words either went straight to my heart or sat at the forefront of my mind for me to ponder on. Before I get into it, I have to warn readers that this book has sensitive themes that may trigger some. From the beginning it was clear she had no particular feelings for her boyfriend, so it felt like a contrived situation to me.
The topics of her books aren’t always easy, and this book had some especially brutal scenes involving domestic violence/rape. Sometimes the heart speaks in whispers, and by the time we hear, by the time we listen, it’s too late and we don’t know.This is a story about growth that just so happens to feature a romance, so the romance does take time.
Yet, again, this book showcases the important of found family and how important it is to cut out toxic family members from your life, because blood is just that; blood, and nothing more. Iris is a strong independent young woman with a mother who used men her whole life to get what she wanted and Iris is determined to break the mould, determined to go through life being dependant on nobody. I dream Caleb will rise out of the bayou some day and eat me whole, and next time I won’t be able to pry his jaws open and escape.
Long Shot (stand-alone) is the against-all-odds love story, spanning years, between NBA superstar and businessman August West and college grad and aspiring sports marketer Iris DuPree. Around 60% we reach an lull period, Iris has gotten away from Caleb and miraculously is over any lingering trauma, August finally got the girl (who felt more like a long awaited prize than a fateful reunion, IMO), but 15% later the monster is back and this is when I decided I've had enough. A bad decision, years of regrets, a love that could never be, but for the dream that kept them alive!
I wore my emotions on my face throughout this entire experience (if I had a camera there you would see how impacted I was not only by the story, but by the way it was beautifully written). Also, this book talks about Hurricane Katrina and how so many families were broken apart and forced to flee New Orleans, and become refuges in their own country. And not only is the romance perfect and the sex amazing, Iris and August’s friendship is always on display and seeing it grow into something more was something more beautiful that I have words for.
Eight words to describe August West: Patient, naïve, considerate, methodical, reflective, focused, noble and oh so sweet. Seven words to describe Iris DuPree: Naïve, lonely, meek, impressionable, stubborn, conflicted and patient. It’s that one night she had with August West before graduation that leaves them both with so many what ifs even years later. kennedy ryan, my new favorite author😭🫶🏼this book was tough to get through to say the very least…i couldn’t put the book down, but there were times that i had to.
