The mandrel spins to load the insert, second, it retracts to set the insert, and third, it reverses. Would recommend for aluminium rivnuts, For steel rivnuts or anything over M6, I'd recommend something with much longer handles or better leverage. You add the insert to the end of the tool, squeeze the handles, and then loosen the tool to complete the installation. It sets M6 Steel hex rivnuts fine, although trying to set steel rivnuts with these short handles is extremely hard work.
