Plug and play capability is available via the in-built soundcard and DJ Performance functions with either rekordbox or Serato DJ Pro.

Pioneer DJ supply the DDJ-FLX6 with both Rekordbox (the Flex is a hardware unlock device) and Serato DJ Pro. One Merge FX is made up of four categories Build FX, Build Sample, Release FX and Drop Sample, which include 41 types of effects, all of which can be united to create over 9,000 different patterns. The VirtualDJ software will also be available to use with the original DDJ-FLX6 (black/white models) by updating the unit to the latest firmware version, and TRAKTOR PRO 3 will be available to use with either model by downloading the mapping files (TSI file).

The Pioneer DDJ-FLX6-GT introduces a new look and feel for its full-size jog wheels, which feature a graphite color plus a metallic texture on top and a rubberized coating on the outer ring for improved playability.

The beauty is that it can be done at any point throughout any track and then play can be selected on the other deck to introduce the next track (from any genre with a different BPM) flawlessly. One great aspect of the Merge FX is that they allow for very complex FX chains, which would usually require more than two hands. With this regard, I would have considered the FLX10, but it's like 4x a used flx6 and I would only use it for private parties with friends, so I suppose it is overkill for my use case. The rest of the unit also boasts a sophisticated look, with a brand-new matte gray color across its body.

So again, I probably need only a 4 deck controller as an interface with Rekordbox and route all the audio with my external audio interface? Originally codenamed DDJ-600 internally at Pioneer DJ, the Flex - as it’s now known – has been developed to enable complex transitions between genres for DJs whose musical taste, or that of the dancefloor, is fluid. In total, if rekordbox is the selected music software management system then there are eight Merge FX pattern presets (this reduces to four if Serato DJ Pro is in use), and everything is customisable. Simply press the knob and turn it as fast or as slowly as you like to start building up the tension in the music.

Press it to engage the effect, turn it to alter the speed to add tension to the music, and press the knob again to release the effect. There are four channels at play, so ultimately tracks can be played on decks 1 and 2 whilst scratching can be on 3 and 4.There are 10 different scratch patterns and you can switch from one to another by simply moving the playhead position, shown on the jog wheel’s display, to point toward the angle for the scratch you want to use. So, when you want to create a live remix of a track, or simply add some texture to the music, you can scratch with your favorite sounds. A Sample can be fired upon release to end the track, so all that needs is hitting play on the other deck to introduce the next track into the set. When the FX are released, the track playing on the channel you’re transitioning from will stop playing. The main feature of the DDJFLX6 is the ability to mix between genres, which is instant these days with more and more music being sourced via streaming services.

All you need to do is connect using a USB cable to a connected laptop that is running either of the music software applications, and you are ready to get DJing. The new style includes a familiar layout of controls similar to how you would find them on the club-standard CDJ and DJM setups allowing for intuitive performances. It has incredible versatility with four available channels and new features and has easy plug-in-and-play functionality.Sample Scratch is a new pad mode in rekordbox which allows you to select sounds that have been assigned to the sampler and then load them on to the decks, which allows you to scratch with your favourite sounds.
